Mission and programs · 2023
Primary exempt purpose
Arboretum Detroit's mission is to establish and maintain a public arboretum that demonstrates reforesting Detroit's landscape with stands of trees that highlight their form and diversity, and to educate about the cultural, ecological, aesthetic, and economic role that trees play in the lives of people locally and globally.
-
Establishing a public arboretum in the city of Detroit is an ongoing process as we purchase parcels from the Detroit Land Bank each year, adding to the winding park that is the Arboretum Detroit grounds. This year we purchased three vacant parcels, while continuing clean up and planting/development activities on parcels purchased in previous years. This includes planting 180 trees and shrubs, removing 30 yards of trash and 20 tons of asphalt rubble, installing 1 acre of native wildflower meadow and 33 boulders, creating 250 feet of ADA accessible crushed limestone paths and 400 feet of wood chip walking paths, installing three benches, and a community fire pit and gathering area.

Maintaining the arboretum requires ongoing work. This year we kept 28 parcels free of garbage, mowed and weeded. We watered 300 trees and 300 saplings and several native flower gardens throughout the season. We repaired the Nursery mural damaged by last year's severe weather.

Our mission to educate and engage the community is fulfilled through educational programming, our Win Win Tree Program, educational signage, and Volunteer engagement opportunities. This year we provided learning opportunities to over 100 neighbors and visitors with free inclusive nature based workshops and events such as birding, herbal medicine, mycology, figure drawing, film screening, music jams, and school visits. Our Win Win Tree Program offers an experience in reciprocity to Detroiters by inviting participants to help care for the Neighborhood Tree Nursery in exchange for free trees to plant at home. Our spring and fall workdays put 300 new saplings and 300 flower bulbs in the ground, and gave away 100 trees to participants with instructions in tree planting and care. We installed 10 educational signs at Circle Forest, offering insight into the importance of trees in our lives. Volunteering is about learning new skills and information, physical activity outdoors to increase well being, social interaction with a targeted focus, and cultivating a feeling of positive contribution to our collective well being by fostering public green spaces. We made this opportunity available to over 400 people this year, who contributed over 1200 hours of volunteer time to support the work of our organization, in all three areas of Park Establishment, Park Maintenance, and Education.
