Mission and programs · 2024
Mission
Advancing social justice by focusing on groundbreaking trial work and innovative collaboration across private, public and academic sectors. Our trial lawyers, veterans of historic cases, work closely with the next generation of leaders in the law to prevail in the nations most impactful, precedent-setting cases.
-
In 2024, The Social Justice Legal Foundation (SJLF) had two ongoing programs:1. Fellowship: One of SJLFs two core missions is the fellowship program, whichprovides two years of intensive litigation training to recent law school graduatescommitted to working in civil rights. In September 2024, we welcomed three newfellows to our second fellowship cohort, and we were able to cover their movingexpenses and bar fees. The fellows have since joined our cases, working underthe supervision of our senior staff attorneys and executive director to draftmemoranda and briefs, research legal issues, and contribute to our community outreach and advocacy. After completing their first six months of training, our fellows begin developing their own investigations and building their own civil rights cases with the help of our team.2. Impact Litigation: SJLF's other core mission is to develop precedent-settinglitigation to advance social justice. Our first docket of cases includes five majorpieces of litigation, including two police misconduct cases with the ACLU ofLouisianas Justice Lab and the Southern Poverty Law Center; one case in state courtin Southern California that seeks to ease the burden of homelessness and reducethe punitive fines and fees associated with it; one major class-action case infederal court in Southern California that seeks to hold accountable a private prisonand detention center operator that systematically poisoned immigrant detainees; andone case with the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Knight First AmendmentInstitute in Northern California that aims to have San Mateo County reverse itspolicy of digitizing and destroying inmate mail. We also contribute to the work ofcoalitions that seek to hold accountable the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department and ease the economic burden of civil assessments on people who are indigent and interact with the court system.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
