Mission and programs · 2022
Primary exempt purpose
To develop a publicly accessible 15-acre environmental sanctuary in Gig Harbor, WA. Located in north Gig Harbor, the Harbor Hill residential area is comprised of apartments, townhomes, single-family homes, and the Heron's Key (HK) senior living community. Within Harbor Hills, HK community, are two detention-settlement ponds created when the area was developed. These ponds collect and temporarily detain and filter stormwater runoff from the HK campus and surrounding single-family and apartment residential neighborhoods. The Harbor Hill Environmental Sanctuary area is the perfect place for people of all ages and backgrounds to explore and learn about the restoration of the site, area wildlife, and healthy functioning ecosystems - to interact and connect with the natural world around them.
-
In 2022, the majority of all work of the FHHES Board was focused on working through planning and permitting stage with the City of Gig Harbor, finalizing the landscape management plan, setting the schedule for 2023 trail construction, and continuing the long range plan for a multi-generational educational program designed to bring young and young at heart together at the environmental sanctuary. The ADA accessible trail system will be put in place in 2023. The trail will circumnavigate the stormwater detention ponds that were created when the Heron's Key Senior Living Community and neighboring Harbor Hill neighborhoods were developed. The area is adjacent to a small park and wetlands owned by the City of Gig Harbor. The ADA-accessible pathway is critical to providing residents from the Heron's Key Retirement Community, the surrounding Harbor Hill neighborhoods, and the community at large, stable and safe terrain. Providing an ADA surface walkway surrounding the pond is designed to both help attract and encourage older adults to utilize the area and interact in the wilderness space in a much safer manner.
