Mission and programs · 2023

Primary exempt purpose

To run a weekly food pantry for those living with food insecurity in the town of Catskill and surrounding Greene County.

  • Operation of the Food Pantry: In 2023 Catskill Food Pantry had two part-time staff who were responsible for all aspects of the Pantry's operations and administration. The staff spend at least three days a week on Pantry operations: on Mondays they assess inventory and order items that need replenishment; on Thursdays they travel to the Regional Food Bank in Albany, NY (40 miles away) to pick up previously ordered items and select fresh foods available the day of pick-up, then return to the Pantry to oversee and assist the unloading, unpacking and shelving of goods; and Fridays entail actively staffing the Pantry, overseeing volunteers and engaging with our patrons, then cleaning up, storing or redistributing any leftover foods. Weekly administrative tasks include staying on top of funding opportunities and keeping current with all compliance paperwork required, as well as tracking both pantry usage and inventory, vehicle rentals, volunteer scheduling, and more. In 2023, the Catskill Food Pantry was open 50 weeks on Fridays and served, on average, 89 households per week.

    Expenses $55,905

  • Securing of Food on a Weekly Basis: The Catskill Food Pantry does not own a vehicle for its weekly trips to the Regional Food Bank in Albany, NY. The frequent rental of a reliable van/truck and the associated gas and toll expenses is essential to the efficient pick-up and delivery of increasingly large quantities of food. In 2023, the Pantry transported nearly 140,000 pounds of food from the Regional Food Bank in Albany, NY to the Catskill Food Pantry.

    Expenses $2,402

  • Storage of Food: In 2023, the number of visitors to the Pantry increased significantly from previous years, which required additional refrigeration for fresh produce, dairy and meat products. The Pantry purchased three new, energy-efficient refrigerators to meet this need.

    Expenses $2,001

As filed on the 2023 return.
