Mission
PROJECTS AT WORLD OF DIFFERENCE ARE FOCUSED ON IMPACTING ONE OR MORE OF OUR THREE PROGRAM PILLARS IN COMMUNITIES THAT ARE UNDER-SERVED: AGRICULTURE, EDUCATION AND HEALTH. MANY OF OUR PROJECTS INVOLVE VOLUNTEERS FROM THE U.S. PARTNERING IN-COUNTRY WITH OUR AFRICAN NEIGHBORS (CURRENTLY FOCUSED IN MALAWI) TO ACCOMPLISH SPECIFIC GOALS AND OBJECTIVES. HAVING SUCCESSFULLY ACQUIRED A LARGE PARCEL OF LAND IN EARLY 2022, WORLD OF DIFFERENCE CHOSE A SMALL TEAM OF VOLUNTEER LEADERS WHO COULD HELP OUR ORGANIZATION GATHER DATA TO FURTHER REFINE OUR PROJECTS AND FOCUS AREAS FOR GREATER IMPACT GOING FORWARD.

Land development and staple crops: WOD desires to build capacity in our Malawi team for them to lead out in the various initiatives where we hope to have impact. WOD added several members to our Malawi management team in 2023 including a community manager, agriculture manager, and agriculture intern. They helped with assessment of the property acquired in 2022, made recommendations, and helped with the development projects which included demolishing portions of unstable structures, adding new access roads, identifying zones for various projects, and expanding our staple crops of maize, soya and groundnuts. The macadamia tree farm was expanded with the future goal that this will be a source of operational sustainability. WOD again employed local community members in short-term / temporary assignments to assist in the implementation of these agricultural projects. The harvest from these crops were donated to various partnering organizations and schools to support their feeding programs.Baseline survey: The WOD community manager identified 15 Malawi volunteers who worked together diligently to develop and deliver the first ever baseline survey, including a test pilot. This survey was comprised of 14 sections and 189 questions which were translated from English into Chichewa and then uploaded into SurveyCTO software. The team met in person with members of the various communities to gather information. Over 300 people participated. This provided WOD will valuable information regarding the local communities, their access to resources and their biggest challenges. The data will be used to follow-up with stakeholders, and to identify where WOD can have the greatest impact.Agriculture projects: WOD hosted two agriculture trainings -- one in June and one in September 2023. Each was a 5-day course covering topics such as: swales, water management, zoning, companion planting, soil regeneration, and how to increase crop yields. Participants came from Madesa, Mpunda, Mchiliko, Chitsindo, Mandala, Mchepa, and walked away equipped with basic knowledge and approaches to increase food security at a low cost.Education projects via our Expedition: Our 2023 expedition included 18 volunteers from the US who gathered donations to support various organizations. This included 700+ lbs. of school supplies, hygiene kits, and sports equipment for local schools. Additionally, 400+ lbs. of medical supplies were donated to local hospitals and clinics. Our expedition team, along with 15 Malawi volunteers and our Malawi leadership team, hosted a variety of educational workshops touching on the following topics: women empowerment, male mentorship, agriculture, soap making, and jewelry making. We partnered with Eunice Banda, the official Days for Girls representative in Malawi, to deliver a workshop for young girls and women on menstrual hygiene and provided kits that had been purchased through Zayane Creations, infusing funds into the local economy. More than 350 people from the community participated in these combined workshops. WOD also broke ground for a community resilience center which will be designed for education courses hosted by local leaders.Additionally, the combined team of US and Malawi volunteers hosted a virtual 5k with several hundred people from local communities engaging in an obstacle run. It was an opportunity to build connection as an organization as we played together. Funds raised in the US were used to support projects in Malawi.Partnerships: World of Difference has partnered with several local organizations who have similar goals and objectives to our three pillars, and identified some areas where we can work together to have greater impact. Some examples of the work accomplished in 2023 are:- Zayane Creations and Days For Girls: workshops for community members as mentioned above- Thrive: a school and development center supporting thousands of children with physical disabilities. WOD donated much needed mats, and learning resource materials. Our clinical team also provided mentorship.- Child Legacy International Hospital: plans have been discussed for a NICU.- Hope orphanage: donated formula for abandoned infants in their care- Agape: painted interior and exterior walls of dining and worship hall with murals; cleared land for a football field.- Kamuzu Central Hospital and Malawi College of Health Sciences: discussions regarding the possibility of increasing the capacity of healthcare providers through expanded educational programs.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
