Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

SGAP Leaders empowers underserved teens to become agents of change in their communities and beyond by thinking critically, applying STEM, and championing social justice. Our students 1) brainstorm about projects that they would like to lead (all projects must align with SGAP Leaders' mission), 2) develop a "plan of action," 3) recruit team members, and with guidance, 4) execute their projects. The process of designing, developing and executing their project, exposes our students to real-world challenging experiences such as team dysfunction, poor planning and execution. These challenging experiences are springboards for our students' growth and leadership development. The more we develop our students' ability to think critically, problem solve creatively and lead empathetically, the more successful our students will become. We are committed to rolling out our climate action curriculum to our students and schools from 2024-2026 to better prepare the students for climate-related careers.

Activities or mission (Part I)

SGAP Leaders empowers underserved teens to become agents of change in their communities and beyond by thinking critically, applying STEM, and championing social justice. Our in-person or virtual workshops, tours and speaker series provide a vehicle for students to develop college and career readiness skills. Our workshops challenge students from different schools, regions and countries to think critically around real issues that affect real lives; as a result they develop leadership and team building skills; and through the process, they gain a voice and feel empowered. Unfortunately, students graduating from high school today lack the critical skills to be successful and competitive within the global workplace. SGAP Leaders' programming provides a vehicle for motivated students to gain critical 21st century skills such as presentation, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communications, empathy-building and creativity.

  • Climate Change Curriculum & Sustainability Challenge/Climate Clinics - We crafted then piloted our ten-week Climate Change Curriculum at John F. Kennedy High School with their incoming 9th grade Leadership Training Institute cohort, which culminated with a modified Sustainability Challenge workshop as a final capstone. The purpose of the pilot was to demonstrate SGAP's abilities to implement a longitudinal in-school program and to assess the the curriculum's effectiveness in engaging underserved students, and advancing their knowledge in climate-related issue, environmental justice and activism.

    Expenses $25,420

  • Our SGAP Leaders and interns developed and launched a series of virtual and in-person community service projects that impacted over 1000 recipients in 2022. Projects may include assisting a local horse farm with a fundraising activity, serving lunch to the homeless, sorting and packing food products for a local food bank, or reading to pre-schoolers. Our interns often lead their own project teams. Past interns have teamed with our partners with Rotary to launch a monarch butterfly garden at local middle school. 1,044 middle and high school students actively participated in our youth-led projects: Encouragement, Gifts for Seniors, Care Cards for Healthcare workers, Park Clean-Up, 911, MLK Day of Service, May Day Bouquet, Brian's Story short film...

  • SGAP Leaders coached students from the Leadership Training Institute at Kennedy High School to present at the Montgomery County Public Schools' Climate Summit. Students created a clue-like game entitled WHO KILLED THE PLANET? to expose tween and teens about the climate crisis as well as provide methods that the students can use to mitigate or adapt to address the crisis.

  • Estimated value of time donated by professional in 2022 is $113,670. Various professional volunteer time to the Student Global Ambassador Project. Their time and expertise is crucial to the operations and success of the Student Global Ambassador Project.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
