Research: Because Rush is an academic medical center, research and clinical care come together in innovative and inspiring ways that have the power to transform lives. Even if research work starts in a laboratory, it won't stay there. Discoveries in Rush's labs lead to advances in patient care, while observations in clinical settings inspire research studies designed to improve the way we treat patients. This approach, known as translational research, has led to breakthroughs in patient care at Rush throughout the years. Investigators at Rush are involved in more than 1,500 projects, including hundreds of clinical studies to test the effectiveness and safety of new therapies and medical devices, as well as to expand scientific and medical knowledge. Total research awards in FY2023 topped $100 million.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.

The filer's explanations (Part III)
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 1a Tax indemnification and gross-up payments
- Sherine E Gabriel, MD, MSC was provided a housing benefit that was includable as compensation, subject to a gross-up.
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 1a Housing allowance or residence for personal use
- Sherine E. Gabriel MD, MSC was provided a housing benefit that was includable as compensation, subject to a gross-up. Omar B. Lateef DO was provided a housing benefit that was includable as compensation.
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 1a Health or social club dues or initiation fees
- Health or social club dues or initiation fees - membership is maintained for the President & CEO at The Economic Club of Chicago, Commercial Club, and The Chicago Club. The Senior Vice President of Philanthropy & Chief Development Officer at the University Club. All memberships are used for RUSH fundraising and/or business activities.
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 4a Severance or change-of-control payment
- Starting in FY2020, RUSH University Medical Center ("RUMC") undertook a multi-year management restructuring to decrease net expenses in executive salaries and benefits and redirect the savings toward expanded clinical efforts. Position eliminations, consolidations and separations resulted in certain severance and separation payments. All severance payments to former officers are reflected on the 990 for TY 2022. These rationalization initiatives extended to executive positions at RUSH University and across the RUSH University System for Health. Due to RUMC's role in defraying the vast majority of system-level expenses, the changes across the RUSH System have primarily impacted RUMC's financials. Although these severance/separation amounts show in the current 990 and future 990s, based on the inherent lag in reporting compensation on the 990, the actual cost was previously accrued by the organization and as a result the organization is currently able to reallocate expense budgets to clinical operations. The following received severance payments in 2022: Edward Conway - $116,129 Sherine Gabriel - $346,157 Wendy Cox-Largent - $169,880 Susan Freeman - $192,006
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 4b Supplemental nonqualified retirement plan
- The RUSH Executive Retirement Plan (the "RUSH ERP the "Plan") provides supplemental retirement benefits to eligible executives of RUSH University Medical Center (the "Medical Center"). These benefits are in addition to those provided under the Retirement Plan (a tax-qualified defined benefit pension plan), the 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan, and the 457(b) Supplemental Retirement Savings Plan. The RUSH ERP is effective January 1, 2014, and replaces the Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan (the "SERP"), which was frozen effective December 31, 2013. Any benefits earned under SERP will be preserved. The RUSH ERP is a defined contribution plan designed to provide funds to participants that can be used to provide supplemental retirement income. Once vested, the amount contributed plus investment gains (and minus losses) is paid. The retirement benefits provided under the Plan, like those provided by the SERP prior to 2014, are in addition to those provided under the Medical Center's Retirement Plan, a defined benefit pension plan, the 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan, and the 457(b) Supplemental Retirement Savings Plan. The amounts paid out in 2022 from this plan were as follows: David A Ansell MD - $114,719 Carl Bergetz JD - $29,793 Cynthia E Boyd MD - $46,003 Edward W Conway - $29,165 Wendy Cox-Largent - $27,895 Susan L Freeman MD, MS - $121,216 Sherine E Gabriel MD, MSc - $183,700 Richa Gupta - $8,835 Wayne Keathley - $165,197 Christine Kennedy - $40,964 K. Ranga Rama Krishnan MB, ChB - $320,257 Omar B Lateef DO - $132,116 Diane M McKeever - $105,554 Shonda Morrow - $33,957 Patricia S O'Neil MAE - $51,749 Angelique Richard PhD, RN, CENP - $13,437 Charlotte Royeen PhD - $40,291 Janet Stifter - $38,801 Denise N Szalko - $60,896 The amounts are included in Schedule J Part II Column (B)(iii).
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 7 Non-fixed payments
- Incentive payments are based upon a formula. The amounts are calculated after certain performance and operating goals are achieved. The plan provides limited discretionary parameters if needed.
Part I's answers as filed. A line not listed was left unanswered; on lines 1a and 3 that means the box was not checked.
