Mission
The In[HEIR]itance Project creates space for communities to navigate challenging civic conversations through collaborative theater projects inspired by inherited texts, traditions, cultures, customs, and beliefs.
-
The In[HEIR]itance Project is a national arts organization that works with intersectional, intergenerational, and interfaith communities to build relationships across societal divides through collaborative theater projects inspired by shared cultural touchstones. Since its founding in 2015, the company has employedover 200 artists to engage over 11,000 people in 15 cities in the creation of original theater pieces. In FY 2022, we undertook three major projects. They are described below:Palm Beach Water ProjectThrough community conversations starting in January of 2020 it became clear that the Palm Beach community has a unique relationship with water, climate, and climate change. This project was then slotted into our national project: The Water Saga, a series of plays being devised around the country by The In[HEIR]itance Project exploring the ways in which our relationships with water reveal and inform ourrelationships with each other. We made several visits to Palm Beach in 2020 and 2021, and made additional visits to finish the project in January and March of 2022.Thanks to our partnership with the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, we were able to forge community partnerships throughout the process with:? Meyer Prep Jewish Academy? Temple Beth Am? The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium? The City of West Palm Beach Office of Sustainability? The Manatee Lagoon at Florida P & LWe culminated this project with a full day of programming and a premiere performance at the City of West Palm Beachs Sustainability Fair at the South Florida Science Center throughout the day on April 2, 2022 that was attended by hundreds of families from around the area.Exodus: Coastal VirginiaWe spent the first five months of 2022 completing our project in Coastal Virginia/Hampton Roads, which was part of our national series pairing civic conversations with the Exodus narrative. We worked with 47 community partners (see list below) and engaged over 1000 people in the participatory playmaking process. The performances happened in May of 2022 as part of the Virginia Arts Festival. Additionally, WHRO, the local PBS station in Norfolk, produced a 10 minute documentary and a full length documentary of the project through the process. The full length documentary comes out in late 2023. The 10 minute documentary came out in late 2022 and in the summer of 2023 it won an Emmy award!Selected Highlights? We hosted open rehersarsals and devising sessions to shape the work in each of the 7 cities of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, VA Beach, Hampton, Portsmouth, Newport News, Suffolk, and Chesapeake) over the course of visits to the area in late winter and spring of 2022.? We worked with the Barry Art Museum to honor local artist Maiselle Brown, who lent her artwork to our project and became an advisor to our team? We went into high schools and colleges, both public and private, to help shape the work? We held a special playmaking workshop at the historic Attucks Theater in partnership with the YWCA of Hampton Roads for Marting Luther King weekend? Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
