Mission and programs · 2023
Mission
FIGHTING FOOD INSECURITY AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FOOD WASTE BY RECOVERING AND DELIVERING HEALTHY MEALS TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES. WITH ITS MEAL RECOVERY PROGRAM THE ORGANIZATION DISTRIBUTES SURPLUS MEALS FROM CAFETERIAS OF LOCAL CORPORATIONS, HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES, CATERERS AND RESTAURANTS TO FOOD-INSECURE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. DURING THE PANDEMIC, THE ORGANIZATION ADAPTED ITS OPERATIONS TO LAUNCH ITS BUFFER PROGRAM, PURCHASING MEALS FROM LOCAL RESTAURANTS IN ORDER TO DELIVER THEM FOR FREE TO THE RAPIDLY INCREASING FOOD INSECURE POPULATION. BOTH THE MEAL RECOVERY PROGRAM AND THE BUFFER PROGRAM HELP FAMILIES INCREASE THEIR SELF-SUFFICIENCY, ALLEVIATING HUNGER AND RELATED ANXIETY IN AN EFFICIENT AND CARING WAY.
Activities or mission (Part I)
SHARE MY MEALS FIGHTS BOTH FOOD INSECURITY AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FOOD WASTE BY RECOVERING AND DELIVERING HEALTHY MEALS TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES. AS MANY LOCAL CORPORATIONS, UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, FOOD SERVICE COMPANIES AND RESTAURANTS HAVE UNSERVED EXCESS MEALS AT THE END OF THE DAY, SHARE MY MEALS LEVERAGES THESE SURPLUSES BY DISTRIBUTING THEM TO FOOD INSECURE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY OR TO COMMUNITY PARTNERS ALSO SERVING THE LOCAL FOOD INSECURE POPULATION. SHARE MY MEALS ALSO PURCHASES MEALS FROM LOCAL RESTAURANTS THROUGH ITS BUFFER PROGRAM AND DISTRIBUTES THEM FOR FREE TO LOCAL FOOD INSECURE FAMILIES.
-
SHARE MY MEALS MEAL RECOVERY PROGRAM: DISTRIBUTION OF MEALS DONATED FROM LOCAL UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS, CORPORATIONS, HOSPITALS AND RESTAURANTS. THE MEAL RECOVERY PROGRAM IS AN INNOVATIVE AND SELF-SUSTAINABLE MEALS RECOVERY PROCESS, APPROVED BY THE LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS, THAT RESCUES SURPLUS READY-TO-EAT MEALS FROM FOOD PROVIDERS AND DELIVERS THEM DIRECTLY TO FAMILIES IN NEED IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES OR TO COMMUNITY PARTNERS ALSO SERVING THE LOCAL FOOD INSECURE POPULATION. IN 2023, AROUND 62,000 MEALS HAVE BEEN RECOVERED AND DISTRIBUTED UNDER THIS PROGRAM.
Expenses $1,088,383
-
SHARE MY MEALS BUFFER PROGRAM: THIS PROGRAM WAS LAUNCHED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PANDEMIC IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL RESTAURANTS THAT AGREED TO PREPARE AND SELL MEALS AT COST TO THE ORGANIZATION FOR DISTRIBUTION TO FOOD INSECURE FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY. IN 2021 AND 2022, THIS INITIATIVE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY EXPANDED THANKS IN PARTICULAR TO THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF THE NJEDA'S SUSTAIN AND SERVE NJ PROGRAM. THE MEALS WERE NO LONGER BOUGHT AT COST, ALLOWING THE PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS TO ALSO BENEFIT FROM THE PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM WAS PHASED OUT IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2023. IN 2023, 9,658 MEALS WERE PURCHASED AND DISTRIBUTED UNDER THIS PROGRAM.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
