Mission and programs · 2022

Primary exempt purpose

West Virginia Alliance for Creative Health Solutions (WVACHS) is a primary care practice-based research network (PBRN) leading patient-centered and community-oriented research to bring solutions to priority health disparities and health issues in the state.

  • Health care research focused on primary and preventive care for underserved and disadvantaged populations: The West Virginia Alliance for Creative Health Solutions, Inc. (WVACHS) is an interdisciplinary practice-based research network (PBRN) of primary care clinicians, administrators, and public health leaders engaged in research to improve health and health care systems for West Virginians, particularly those who are underserved. WVACHS clinician researchers conduct research activities on a voluntary basis, alongside their primary care clinical practice. We engage interested medical and other health professions students in practice-based research projects during their clinical rotations and support their interest with tools and research expertise. In 2022, the WVACHS submitted a manuscript for publication on a study examining factors that facilitated and hindered entrance into and retention in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs for opioid use disorder from the perspective of individuals in recovery. We continued work on four studies: 1) transportation barriers experienced by patients in southern West Virginia; 2) non-alcoholic fatty liver disease; 3) primary care at senior housing facilities; and 4) the usefulness of hospital discharge data to primary care clinicians and patients. Throughout the year, six medical students participated in our ongoing research during their clinical rotations and the WVACHS hired a first-year medical student as a Research Assistant. The WVACHS also expanded our research activities to include contracting with other grant-funded research projects in non-profit organizations to support data collection, analysis, and program evaluation.

    Expenses $13,449 · Grants $10,666

  • Dissemination of research results to inform practice, policy, and public education: To share knowledge gained from our research and to inform practice and policy, in 2022 the WVACHS presented results from our study on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder to groups of clinicians and policymakers, and at one conference.
