ARTISTS REPERTORY THEATRE'S MISSION IS TO PRODUCE INTIMATE, PROVACATIVE THEATRE AND PROVIDE A HOME FOR A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES TO TAKE CREATIVE RISKS.

Activities or mission (Part I)

THE COMPANY'S MISSION IS TO ENGAGE DIVERSE AUDIENCES IN FRESH, THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND INTIMATE THEATRE. PRODUCTIONS FEATURE THE WORK OF A CORE GROUP OF ACCOMPLISHED RESIDENT ARTISTS, EACH WITH A SHARED HISTORY AND A SHORTHAND FOR COLLABORATION, WORKING ALONGSIDE GUEST ARTISTS FROM PORTLAND AND BEYOND. THE COMPANY IS COMMITTED TO WORLD-CLASS ACTING, DIRECTING, DESIGN AND STAGECRAFT THAT SUPPORT NEW PLAYWRITING AND ASPIRE TO EMBODY GREAT LITERATURE, MOVING AUDIENCES TO FEEL AND EXPERIENCE STORYTELLING IN A WAY THAT ONLY THE BEST LIVE THEATRE CAN.

  • ARTISTIC AND PRODUCTION - ARTISTS REPERTORY THEATRE (ART) MADE THE DIFFICULT, BUT NECESSARY DECISION TO SUSPEND THE PRODUCTION OF PLAYS FOR THE FY24 SEASON (SEPT 23-JUNE 24). IN JUNE 2023 WE WERE NOTIFIED OF NOT BEING AWARDED SIGNIFICANT FUNDS FROM THE STATE OF OREGON DUE TO SB 2459 NOT PASSING. THIS CRIPPLED OUR ABILITY TO FULLY FUND THE FIRST PLAY IN OUR PLANNED SEASON. STRATEGICALLY, WE ALSO RECOGNIZED THE NEED TO UTILIZE OUR CASH AND STAFF RESOURCES AS WISELY AS POSSIBLE, IN ORDER TO STEER TOWARDS COMPLETION OF THE FIRST ACTIVE CONSTRUCTION PHASE OF OUR RISE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN. THAT PHASE COMPLETED IN FEBRUARY 2024, ENABLING US TO RETURN TO OUR HOME LOCATION AN BEGIN OPERATING IN A TEMPORARY PERFORMANCE VENUE. IN APRIL WE WERE AN ANCHOR VENUE FOR THE FERTILE GROUND FESTIVAL, HOSTING THEIR PRESS EVENT AND MULTIPLE PERFORMANCES AND READINGS OVER A TWO-WEEK PERIOD. IN MARCH WE PRESENTED A WEEKLONG HOMECOMING CELEBRATION TITLE THE ENCORE FESTIVAL. DURING THE FESTIVAL WE PRESENTED 4 STAGED READINGS FROM ARTS HISTORY, CURATED AND PERFORMED BY FOUNDING ARTISTS AND RESIDENT ARTISTS. IN MAY WE ADDED AN ADDITIONAL WORKSHOP READING OF SUNNYS GIFTS AND THINGS, A NEW PLAY BY LAVA ALAPAI. WE CLOSED OUR HOMECOMING CELEBRATIONS WITH A WEEK LONG TAKEOVER AND PERFORMANCE BY OUR PATHWAYS MENTORSHIP COHORT, WHO PRESENTED THEIR CAPSTONE PROJECT, AN ORIGINAL WORK TITLED WILD/CAUGHT.

    Expenses $486,756 · Revenue $9,030

  • AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT AND SERVICES AS PART OF OUR STRATEGIC REFOCUSING ON ARTS FUTURE WE CONVENED A SERIES OF COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS TO GATHER INPUT AND FEEDBACK FROM VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS. THESE CONVERSATIONS AIMED TO HELP ART IN ITS STRATEGIC PLANNING AND PROGRAMMING DECISIONS, AS WELL AS TO STRENGTHEN ITS RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMMUNITY. THE PURPOSE OF THESE CONVERSATIONS WAS TO HAVE HONEST, FRANK, AND CONSTRUCTIVE DISCUSSIONS WITH A WIDE RANGE OF PEOPLE; TO GATHER FEEDBACK ON ARTS WORK AND TO DISCUSS ARTS FUTURE; TO DETERMINE WHAT KIND OF THEATRE IS NEEDED NOW; TO EXPLORE HOW THEATRE BUILDS COMMUNITY AND WHAT KIND OF WORK WILL BRING PEOPLE BACK TO THE THEATRE; TO CULTIVATE A SENSE OF OWNERSHIP AND EXCITEMENT ABOUT ARTS FUTURE; AND TO IMPROVE THE THEATRE-GOING EXPERIENCE. THE FEEDBACK SHAPED PROGRAMMING CHOICES FOR THE CURRENT SEASON; HELPED ART REBUILD THE COMPANY AND CREATE A STRONG SENSE OF OWNERSHIP AND EXCITEMENT ABOUT ITS FUTURE; LED TO IMPLEMENTING MORE POINTS OF CONNECTION SUCH AS OPEN REHEARSALS AND SMALL SOCIAL EVENTS; ADJUSTING AUDIENCE SERVICES TO BE FRICTION-FREE; AND INFUSING ART'S SPACE WITH A SPIRIT OF JOYFUL HOSPITALITY.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
