Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

National Volunteer Fire Council's (the council) mission is to formulate and promulgate programs useful to the fire and emergency services of the United States, represent the volunteer fire and EMS in national legislative & standards-making matters, represent the interests of the member state fire and emergency organizations at the congress of the United States and with the various federal agencies, provide a national voice for the volunteer fire and emergency medical services and to do all other things designed to better preserve the lives and property of the citizens of the United States.

Activities or mission (Part I)

Represent the interests of the member state fire and emergency organizations at the national level.

  • Health & Safety: The council's health & safety program addressed multiple risk factors facing first responders, including behavioral health issues, injury, cancer, and heart-health. The council conducted extensive outreach regarding health and safety issues facing first responders, developed training on health and safety topics, and coordinated the efforts of a working group of subject matter experts.

  • Make Me a Firefighter: The NVFC's Make Me a Firefighter program provides a national-level recruitment and retention campaign for volunteer firefighters. The program provides a listing of volunteer opportunities as well as tools, outreach materials, and other resources to help volunteer fire departments find and retain volunteers.

  • Behavioral Health: The Behavioral Health Program teaches fire departments how to foster a psychologically healthy workplace through a toolkit, training, a mental health provider directory, and other resources surrounding mental wellness in the workplace.

  • Other programs including General Motors. The General Motors project allows NVFC to impact vehicle and road safety for volunteer first responders as well as road users who need emergency services. This is accomplished through a slowdown/move over public awareness campaign, information on where to obtain traffic incident management training, and by providing training on electric vehicle (EV) incident response.
