Mission
Metro Blooms partners with communities to create resilient landscapes and foster clean watersheds, embracing the values of equity and inclusion to solve environmental challenges.
-
Learning with Blue Thumb: Blue Thumb - Planting for Clean Water is Metro Blooms' education program and partnership of local government, landscape contractors, native plant nurseries and others committed to promoting native plantings, raingardens, and shoreline plantings. Sustainable Landcare Training-growing a local workforce and creating job and education pathways in the environmental field. The 30-hour program covers stormwater basics, installing and caring for the green infrastructure, native plants and more. Metro Blooms had 52 participants in 2023 and participants were from underserved communities. Many youth members of All Nations Church took part in the landscape training in North Minneapolis. Afterwards, several participants became a paid crew for Metro Blooms, planting and maintaining area boulevard projects. DIY Workshops - Metro Blooms reached hundreds of DIYers with our Resilient Yards and Pollinator Lawn workshops. We also debuted a partnership with MN SEED for workshops on collective native seed and winter sowing. In 2023, 20 workshops were offered with 457 participants. In addition, Metro Blooms debuted the free Resilient Yards Online Learning Series with 4,479 participants. Lawns to Legumes - Minnesotans received individual grants of up to $350 to plant native pollinator habitat at home. Blue Thumb managed the program for the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. In 2023, 61 acres of native pollinator habitat created, 2,496 projects completed, and 4,124 pollinator-friendly trees and shrubs were planted.

Our Community Projects in 2023 included the following: - Partnering with communities for more resilient landscapes: Metro Blooms engaged residents in communities that have experienced environmental injustice to work on creating more resilient outdoor spaces. Metro Blooms worked with five rental communities to incorporate clean-water practices and native planting for pollinators, and that centered community priorities. Residents were active decision-makers in their projects. Metro Bloom hired residents as project stewards to work alongside the Organization in planting and landcare. These projects were made possible by public and private funding, including watershed districts, cities and counties, foundations, property owners, and individual donations, and by partnering with deeply rooted community members and organizations. The projects had more than 400 resident and community member participants, 37,000 native plants, and 2 million gallons of stormwater runoff diverted annually. "Flowers That Beam": residents planted 886 plants and native plant pollinator gardens, fruit trees, nature play elements, benches, lighting, and bike racks on a vacant lot in North Minneapolis. Three large rain gardens were installed at Riverside Plaza.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
