Primary exempt purpose

The Georgia Coalition for Higher Education in Prison GACHEP builds high-quality educational pathways from pre-college coursework to accredited degree completion for people who are in prison and people who have left prison in Georgia.

  • To provide support services for people seeking higher education after leaving prison: In fall of 2022 GACHEP hired a full time reentry coordinator to provide case management to people leaving prison and to build relationships with wraparound service providers to refer people based on their needs. We provided four fellowships for people seeking higher education to receive leadership development training and receive funds for their next steps in work and education. In addition we provided further direct assistance through scholarships emergency relief funds and honoraria for speaking engagements to people who have left prison and are continuing their education.

    Expenses $21,108 · Grants $18,150

  • To establish and strengthen lines of communication and collaboration between colleges and universities state agencies and nonprofits statewide in relation to higher education in and after prison. We held meetings for college and university partners across the state to share resources and work together including three new partners at Central Georgia Technical College Morehouse College and Brewton Parker College. We co-led an event on College Behind Bars at Morehouse College in march with state agency partners and an end-of-year event on higher education in prison featuring our full circle fellowship participants. We hosted four student interns from Savannah State College Life University and Georgia State University.
