Mission and programs · 2022
Primary exempt purpose
The primary purpose of ECAL Inc. is to strengthen the quality of early learning programs for young children that increase their social, emotional and academic readiness for future learning.
-
ECAL Inc. established Caring Commuities:Birth-3 in 2008 to transform program philosophy and practice in child care settings for infants and toddlers. The initiative has successfully implemented programs in 20 sites in central Ohio and one site in Cincinnati, Ohio through training and mentoring of center teachers and directors. The CC: B-3 initiative has assisted in improving over all center quality, with several centers receiving increased quality ratings from the state's Step Up to Quality child care center rating system. CC: B-3 impacted on the quality of care for over 280 infants and toddlers in child care centers in central Ohio during this reporting year. All centers who have made the commitment to transform their programs from individual groups of younger infants, older infants and toddlers to mixed age communities of infants and toddlers together have maintained that program model despite issues of funding challenges because they understand the added value to young children in a mixed age class with continuing, primary teachers. ECAL Inc offers 30 trainings that are Ohio Approved for professional development with registration for the trainings offered through the state website, OCCRRA, or through private contract with centers. It also offers mentoring services for teacher and center directors for program improvement and enhancement. CC: B3 directors meet monthly to discuss local and state public policy issues affecting early childhood centers. In June, 2022, ECAL published a professional journal about the Caring Communities Birth to 3 Initiative that is being used as a pathway for center directors/owners and teachers to transform their infant and toddler programs from single age classrooms to mixed age classrooms. A book study guide has also been developed which is used as a new training tool, both on-line and in person.
