Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

Facilitate committed and open partnerships and projects that enable habitats, species and cultures to thrive, and to provide sustainable economic activities that place equal value on income security, quality of life and the health of our shared environment.

  • We helped fund five eco-cultural resilience programs managed by our Malaysian partner Forever Sabah Berhad (FS, foreversabah.org) that continue a transition towards a diversified, equitable, living economy. The over-arching program entitled "Forever Sabah: To the Edge & Into the Emerging Future" sunsetted and our new "Forever Sabah: Into a Relational Future" began, focusing on robust and diversified micro-economic growth strategies moving forward. Thirdly, 100% of Oregon State University income through us supported FS's iterative success training model's international spread. We granted other income for FS's Human Elephant Harmony (HEH, foreversabah.org/human-elephant-harmony) that continues to grow human appreciation of wild elephant neighbors. We also funded FS's palm oil transition to diversified agroforestry education. Finally, our own program salary apportioning and Zoom costs finalized our expenses.

    Expenses $418,252 · Grants $375,961

  • For 2023 we funded and just two of our Malaysian partner LEAP Spiral's (LS, leapspiral.org) ongoing programs. One of their newest programs, Carbon Sovereign Sabah (web-hosted by FS at foreversabah.org/programs-projects-partnerships/css) arose in response to an obtuse agreement between the Sabah State Government and a Singapore company that granted exclusive rights to monetise 2 million hectares of Sabah's forest reserves for carbon and non-carbon assets. Indigenous communities surrounding and inhabiting these forests were overlooked. We also funded their ongoing Pangolin Rescue Rehabilitation & Release (P3R, leapspiral.org/sundapangolins) program. These grants, together with our own program costs helped keep pangolins in the news, and challenged foreign corporate climate greenwashing, engaging wide ranging demographics around forest biodiversity, cultural participation, and economic sustainability all supporting entrepreneurial growth opportunities.

    Expenses $90,136 · Grants $70,000

  • We continue to directly micro-fund ($2,434.05) a very long running program of ours, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (bsbcc.org.my) even though it has become quite self-sufficient and popular with locals and tourists alike. This contrasts with a brand new project we also directly funded ($60,000) that is right on mission and coincident with our recent focus on adaptive learning strategies moving forward. This new USA granting supports the creation of a parent-child driven podcast exploring our children's future from a child's inquisitive perspective, that is currently called The Future How Show. What skills do our kids need, to be equipped for their lifetime? Finally, though no granting, we did have some salary apportioned costs and one small Honorarium expense in supporting another ongoing Bornean project called KampOng Campus, an eco-literacy and leadership training facility.

    Expenses $88,404 · Grants $62,434

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.

Grants on this return

  • Soil and Shadow LLC CA entity #201603310399

    $60,000

This was a podcast development grant intended to help USA parents and youth begin to prepare for living into our inevitable collective future. Much of USA culture teaches living in the present, which implies both 1. not learning the lessons of history, and 2. not steering your own life towards an intentional future. This "future how" question is something that Land Empowerment Animals People Inc has been steering towards for several years, so this USA effort matched well with our mission and present focus.
