Mission and programs · 2022
Mission
The Public Policy Lab is a nonprofit innovation lab. Our mission is to design policies and programs that help poor and marginalized Americans build better lives. To do that, we partner with government agencies, philanthropies, and NGOs and the communities they serve to develop more satisfying and effective services through ethnographic research, human-centered design, rapid prototyping, and formative evaluation.
Activities or mission (Part I)
The Public Policy Lab is a nonprofit innovation lab. Our mission is to design policies and programs that help poor and marginalized Americans build better lives.
-
For the Executive Office of the President, the Public Policy Lab partnered with staff from White House's Office of Management and Budget to design policy concepts to measurably improve the experience of Americans dealing with key life events that involve multiple federal agencies. We focused on two life events: facing a sudden financial shock and birth/early childhood for low-income children and their families. Pilots of the concepts are expected to launch in 2023.For the NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD), we are launching a two-year effor to redesign the applicant, landlord, and staff experience of using and administering HPD's Section 8 voucher program. For the NYC Administration of Children's Service and the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, PPL researched how families connect with and experience mental health and therapeutic support services, then began to develop strategies to prioritize resource distribution in city agencies, refine referral pathways for families, better engage young clients in therapeutic sessions, and create sustainable feedback channels for families and providers' voices to be heard. We are continuing to support the agencies' management and implementation of these strategies.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
