Mission
826 Valencia is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supportingstudents ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills and helping teachers get theirstudents excited about writing. Our work is based on the understanding that strongwriting skills are fundamental to future success and that great leaps in learningcan be made when skilled tutors work one-on-one with students.
Activities or mission (Part I)
Supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills & helping teachers get students excited about writing. We advocate that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success & that great leaps in learning can be made when skilled tutors work one-on-one with students.
-
In-School Programs: 826 Valencia partners with public schools throughout San Francisco to collaboratively develop writing curricula. We also bring teams of 826 staff and volunteer tutors to partner schools where we support students 3:1 with writing projects. In FY23, we supported 16 teachers and 570 students at 5 schools, establishing regular weekly partnerships with classrooms and supporting a variety of writing projects. One highlight was our Young Authors Book Project in spring 2023. We worked with tenth and eleventh grade students at The Academy at McAteer, where students explored the invisible and visible parts of their identities and worked with 826 staff and tutors to craft powerful pieces of writing. We published their work in a book entitled, ""Never Forever Last"" which was released at a book release event in May of 2023.
Expenses $1,760,378 · Grants $107,100
-
Afterschool:826 Valencia provides free after-school tutoring and writing support at four locations in San Francisco, including our three Writing Centers and our partner school, Buena Vista Horace Mann (BVHM). Students enroll for a minimum of two days per week for homework and individual support with reading and writing. Together, these programs served 390+ students in 2022-2023. We partnered with community organizations to ampify our students' voices, including showcasing writing at City Hall. Another highlight from Fiscal Year 2023 was a festive, cake-themed writing project for our students at our after school program at our Mission Center.
Expenses $819,315
-
Field Trip Programs: 826 Valencia hosts storytelling/bookmaking field trips for elementary schools at its Mission Center, creative storytelling field trips for elementary schools at its Mission Bay Center, and podcasting field trips for middle and high schools at its Tenderloin Center. Typically, these programs serve 4,000 students annually. Our Tenderloin Center had 75 podcasting field trips, serving 1,800+ students. Our students' podcasts reached over 25,000 listeners through our SoundCloud page.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
