Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

Second Chance Foods (SCF or the Organization) is dedicated to reducing food waste by rescuing food that would otherwise be discarded, reducing hunger on a local basis while elevating the health of those served by the program, and reducing land fill volume and emissions.

  • 1) Distribution of recovered groceries - SCF recovers surplus groceries from farms, grocery stores, restaurant suppliers, and other food donors that would otherwise go to waste. These fresh, nutritious foods are sorted and distributed to partner food pantries or community organizations. In 2024, we had twelve partner hunger relief organizations for this program and distributed over 328,000 pounds of groceries.2) Upcycled meal preparation - recovered food that is not distributed as fresh groceries is brought into our commercial kitchen and is cooked into healthy, ready-to-eat meals. We donate these meals through our sixteen distribution partners. In 2024, we prepared and distributed almost 118,000 meals.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
