Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

Research, education, and public awareness of the political, moral and philosophical principles of free and democratic societies

  • Marriage and Family: This program consists primarily of the activities of CanaVox, a marriage movement founded by mothers to provide the intellectual tools to help people understand deep and complicated issues in contemporary debates about human sexuality. CanaVox facilitates reading groups for professionals, young adults, college students, and teenagers that discuss these issues in 43 states and 41 countries. CanaVoxs website is www.canavox.com.

    Expenses $677,117

  • Academic Programs: These programs consist of seminars and one-on-one mentoring with Princeton University students and with promising students in high school, college, and graduate school at other institutions. These activities seek to form young people to cherish personal virtue and responsibility and the pursuit of truth. In 2024 we continued to expand our programs for high school students.

    Expenses $600,077 · Grants $75,000

  • Other Programs: The Witherspoon Institute occasionally provides advice, grants, or other support for organizations or scholars whose missions are very similar to its own. The Institute does not accept applications for such support. Such support develops out of preexisting relationships that the Institute may have with scholars through the Institutes own programming. In 2024 the Institute provided such advice and support for programs at Princeton University and other institutions.

    Expenses $544,694 · Grants $143,586

  • Public Opinion: This program consists primarily of the work of Public Discourse, an online journal located at www.thepublicdiscourse.com. It publishes one short article per weekday by numerous authors on topics of interest to the Institute. Occasionally we also publish longer articles and interviews. Articles are organized around what we consider to be the five pillars of decent and dynamic societies: the dignity of the human person, marriage and the family, the rule of law, higher education and academic research, and business and the market.

    Expenses $366,165

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
