Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

To provide hope, opportunity, and support that empowers women and children as they journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency.

  • Sparrows Nest This program has seven resale store locations. Six stores do business under the banner of Sparrows Nest Thrift Store and Donation Centers. The Sparrows Nest stores are located in Cary, McHenry, Mundelein, Palatine, Third Lake and Woodstock. One store does business under the name of Community Threads and is located in Arlington Heights. Inventory for all seven stores is received from donations and is processed and determined to be sellable or non-sellable. Sellable inventory is resold in the store and non-sellable inventory is given to recycling companies. Income generated from store sales and recycling provides support for existing programs within Home of the Sparrow. The thrift stores are also a zero-cost provider of clothing, furniture and housewares to Home of the Sparrow clients and clients of other partnering agencies in Northern Illinois.

    Expenses $3,871,324 · Revenue $4,237,394

  • Affordable Housing Program The Organization has an affordable housing program for low to moderate income families who were homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless. These housing units are for women and their children who have an annual income between 30 to 50 percent of the Area Median Income, offering a safe, comfortable place to live.

    Expenses $363,222 · Revenue $237,361

  • Subsidized Apartment Program SAP This program provides a vital bridge between the Transitional Shelter and community housing. Some clients are ready to move into community living but require extra time to build resources needed for independent living. SAP offers five units of subsidized housing for clients who have a job but cannot afford to pay Affordable Housing Program rent. While in SAP, clients continue to receive all the services offered in the Shelter program. SAP clients generally stay in the program for a year before moving into the Organizations Affordable Housing Program or into other housing within the community. Rapid Rehousing Program The Organization manages short-term to medium-term rental assistance for families who have met the HUD definition of homelessness and have employment but have experienced a life-event that put them into financial jeopardy. These families are ready to bypass transitional shelter services and enter directly into an apartment. Families are assisted into community housing within 30 days of acceptance into this program.

    Expenses $1,707,531

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
