Primary exempt purpose

Promote economic development in Shawano County, Wisconsin

  • ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: A local property is on the short list for a company to expand into the Wisconsin market. The project would include a $25MM investment in the facility and 200 new jobs in the next three years. Assisted with a number of site/building requests with local companies looking to expand. Completed loan documentation for a couple of Shawano projects. Completed New North requests for available sites and buildings, average of about 2/month. Had multiple visits with individuals looking to start a business or needing some business connections. Identified a site in Bonduel for a business to construct a new facility to house their construction business. Met with a number of business brokers interested in the Shawano market, both in terms of straight up real estate deals and some interested in acquiring local businesses. Met with two businesses interested in building a new facilities. Identified potential building sites. Moved forward on two business expansions. Naletta Sanchez of WEDC was in town to work on a potential CDI grant and historic tax credit project in downtown Shawano. Nueske's made it to the Final Four in the Best Thing Made in Wisconsin sponsored by WMC. SCEPI worked on social media promotion to get out the vote. Outreach to business brokers to be more proactive on businesses looking to exit. Participated in conversations with Nationwide Management, who is the staffing agency for a large, local business, and other potential employers that could use his services. Receive weekly business assistance calls from people looking to start a business or expand their current businesses. A Tigerton business is looking to refinance their current loan and we are working with their new lender to re-secure the second mortgage on the property. Wittenberg Business Park has two projects in the works and would extend infrastructure to the back of their business park as a result. Nueske's has a planned expansion and a small manufacturer needs a location. Worked on four site selection opportunities, two dental offices, one contract manufacturer and a behavioral health provider. Worked on leasing/selling the former Reinhart facility. Worked with a landscaping business to acquire land in the Shawano business park to create a physical showroom and presence in the local market. Worked with several businesses as they either look to acquire another business or expand their current operations. Worked with the City of Shawano to capitalize an RLF for future business assistance. Worked with the City to close TIF assisted loans for a number of businesses. Worked with the Village of Wittenberg to close their TID 1, and to create TID 4 to complete the extension of utilities in their business park. Worked with WEDC on a Direct Foreign Investment (DFI) visit at a local business.

    Expenses $76,072

  • HOUSING: Bonduel was able to obtain seven single family lots and is beginning the process of extending infrastructure next spring. Brought two potential users to a local facility in the hopes of getting that facility in use. Continued outreach to multi-family and single-family developers. Continued participation in the recovery housing work that will serve as a sober living facility for women. Continued to track of the SCS project in Wittenberg and hope to keep the project on track for first units ready in the fall of 2024. Introduced NEWCAP to the City of Shawano for a potential housing project adjacent to their new facility. Met with Wolf River Development and NEWCAP on senior housing opportunities. The Village of Bonduel has secured a portion of a platted subdivision. SCEPI and the village are working through a development agreement with a spec housing developer that has experience in this type of market. Tracked a number of housing bills in the legislature that would assist in housing development.

  • BROADBAND:Attended a PSC listening session at FVTC for inputs on the implementation of the federal infrastructure funding. Cirrinity and the County have completed a grant application for the PSC grant funding round in October, 2023. If the grant is successful the project will provide fiber to all of the County's communication towers in the western half of the county and provide high speed internet access to 350 households. Met with Counties Association, UW Law, and WEDA about the feasibility of a legislative study committee to make changes to the PSC. The PSC Broadband grant was submitted. Attended several New North Organizational meetings on the Broadband Planning Grant and the process in place. Attended three BEAD Grant (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program) webinars with the PSC. Both related to the planning grants rolling out in March. Identified Scott Nyman, Joe Dawidziak, Rhonda Strebel, Matt Hietpas and myself to work on the future BEAD. Continued meeting with New North on the BEAD Planning Grant. State budget tracking includes a number of initiatives to incent businesses with day care and direct funding for day care providers. Toured Shiocton School Districts Day Care Center with staff from the Shawano School District. Shiocton has a waiting list for their day care and the day care has reversed their decline in enrollments.
