Mission

see schedule O for continuation of statement. The United Methodist City Society (UMCS) is a multifaceted program agency that is the urban social service program partner of United Methodist churches in the New York metropolitan area. The UMCS was founded in 1838 by Methodist Women in New York City for the purpose of organizing charity schools among the poor. The UMCS is a multi- faceted service organization that addresses the educational, spiritual, recreational and social needs of persons of all ages and all faiths by providing operational grants for churches and social service programs in the metro region. UMCS provides administrative and entrepreneurial coaching for pastors and lay leaders that enable churches to respond to the needs of individuals and families in their communities. Programs supported by the UMCS include after-school programs, food pantries, soup kitchens, residential addiction treatment centers, retreat facilities, senior centers and summer camps.

Activities or mission (Part I)

UMCS helps other not for profit and religious institutions to identify the needs of children, youth and adults, and help them to establish programs and support to meet the requests of their local communities in ways that transform lives. UMCS focuses the local mission concerns of area congregations on specific needs and projects while building their capacity to make a significant difference in the lives of individuals, neighborhoods and their communities. UMCS supports programs designed to improve the quality of life in a community and impact the lives of individuals in that neighborhood.

  • The Children's Program supported students through summer and afterschool program services from July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023. The Children's Program continues to serve fewer students due to the organizations admistors of the programs are finding it harder to obtain the right resources. Sites under the Children's Program umbrella receive support for capacity building, best practices for quality program operations, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) enrichment services for student participants, and support with outcome measurement tracking. Most of the students participating in the summer and afterschool programs are from low-income communities where resources are limited and the need for academic assistance is high.

    Expenses $176,812 · Grants $80,215

  • In the past year, UMCS helped local United Methodist congregations or non-profit organizations meet their needs through grants for programming and capital-building support, to support mission work. Each year, UMCS provides property and liability insurance to four churches and facilities so that they can continue to be a place of community outreach and public worship. These funds are provided by income from our investment portfolio and contributions from individuals and United Methodist Churches. We work with the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church to provide programs and ministries throughout the metropolitan region.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
