Mission and programs · 2023

• Our signature program, the Emerging Lens Fellowship saw significant growth in 2023 with the receipt of a National Endowment of the Arts grant allowing AWP to professionalize the experience for our grantees. For the first year, we were able to offer up to three fellows annually, depending on funding, $5,000 unrestricted fellowship awards along with formalizing our mentorship process by paying experienced international photographers honorariums for their time and commitment to building relationships and career pipelines for our fellows, while also raising the profile of the program based on the reputation of the mentors involved. Two fellows were funded during 2023 for $5,000 each.

• We saw success with our ongoing research-based exhibition "Borders Cruzadas" which we were able to exhibit and program across a number of high-profile arts and cultural events across Chicago including a sponsored pop-up exhibition and artists' talk at EXPO Chicago, a pop-up and presentation at the annual Night of Ideas festival hosted by the French Consulate's Arts and Culture Unit, and also secured fellowship funding for our collaborating photographers to kick start a one-year residency in Chicago to continue their fieldwork while also engaging with students from Chicago communities for arts education programs and workshops.

  Expenses $105,115

• Thanks to funding from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, we were able to launch a Curatorial Fellowship program with our inaugural fellow, a recent graduate from the School of the Art Institute, whose focused curatorial research and writing helped AWP to secure a number of exhibition opportunities for upcoming fairs. This program has allowed us to deepen our connection with college and graduate level art schools to start to develop more engagement and resource sharing opportunities across our institutions.
