Mission
The AAN strives to enhance member career fulfillment and promote brain health for all.
Activities or mission (Part I)
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is the leading voice in brain health. As the world's largest association of neurologists and neuroscience professionals with more than 44,000 members, the AAN offers access to continuing education, practice tools, networking and advocacy opportunities, and more. Our mission is to enhance member career fulfillment and promote brain health for all. A neurologist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, care, and treatment of brain, spinal cord, and nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke, concussion, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, headache, and migraine. The AAN exists for the benefit of its members, to do the things collectively that would be nearly, if not completely, impossible to do individually. No matter what stage our members are in their careers, or what their roles are within the field of neurology, our commitment to our members' professional lives is evident in what we do throughout the year.
-
Membership: The AAN continued to prove its value to neurology in 2025 by maintaining record membership recruitment and retention. Neurologists and neuroscience professionals from around the world make up the AAN community, and membership grew to 44,000 in 2025.
-
Training/Tools/Resources: The AAN continued in 2025 to offer resources that help members enhance the efficiency of daily practice operations and provide optimal patient care. We provided valuable, practical guidance for neurologists through the "Starting and Managing a Neurology Practice" webinar series, the Cognitive Therapies Implementation Guide, and other products.
-
Publications: The publication of scientific, scholarly, and practice-related content is a vital part of the AAN's activities. This work is essential to the careers of our members and the advancement of neuroscience, which aims to discover prevention and treatments for brain diseases and disorders. The AAN's publications offer this content and resources to members and provide an opportunity to generate revenue that helps keep membership dues low. Several of these important publications saw enhancements or achievements in 2025. The AAN's flagship Neurology(R) journal launched Neurology(R) Open Access, a free online peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research articles, scholarly reviews, case reports, and study protocols in all areas of neurology and the clinical neurosciences. Neurology(R) also launched the Open Reports feature, which fosters transparency and education about the review process. Finally, Neurology Today(R), the AAN's news source for neurologists and neuroscience professionals, received Apex awards of excellence in two areas.
As filed on the 2025 return.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
