Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

To enhance the O'odham Himdag (language, culture, lifeways) by strengthening families through the provision of quality higher education.

Activities or mission (Part I)

To enhance the unique Tohono O'Odham Himdag through holistic, quality education services.

  • Student Services and Student Life: Salaries and benefits for Counselor, Admissions Staff, staff providing Financial Aid Services including Pell grant processing for more than $750,000 in grants to students, salary for Recruiter, Director of center in Phoenix, Dual Enrollment Coordinator. A combination of the different services provided gave support to over 1200 students from over 70 Tribal Nations and resulted in the College's largest graduating class to date, with over 50 graduates with Associate Degrees. Other student support included professional advising by 2 full time advisors coordinating the effort with full-time faculty who also advised students.

    Expenses $2,583,912 · Grants $860,377

  • Instructional Services:Salaries and benefits for 18 full-time and 40 part-time instructors. Instructors provided both face-to-face and online course offerings helping over 1200 students earn credits, certificates, and degrees. Student retention increased as well, indicating the quality of instructional services provided.

    Expenses $2,219,899

  • Sponsored Projects:Grants in Sponsored Projects support a range of initiatives that support the mission and vision of the Tohono O'odham Community College.1) A multi-year National Science Foundation (NSF) grant - "Tribal Enterprise Advancement Center" - with four more years to run, supports the effort to revitalize the O'odham language. 2) Another NSF grant, now in its last year of 5, supports TOCC's STEM curriculum in the fields of math, chemistry, and biology. As a result, we now have a cadre of students who are pursuing education in STEM fields and who can transfer to university upon graduation. 3) A grant from the State of Arizona in collaboration with the Tohono O'odham Nation and the College funds major construction and renovation of college infrastructure. Those funds helped our apprenticeship program rehabilitate a space that serves our carpentry, electrical and plumbing students in their quest to be journey persons in the field and to have gainful employment in construction industries. The funds derive from Transaction Privilege Taxes and the College realizes ca. $40K/month from those revenues. 4) The Facilities Improvement and Repair grant from the Bureau of Education, was used for removal of small structures that had fallen into disrepair and that were hazardous as well as taking up needed space on our small campus west of Sells, Arizona. 5) The Title III program from the Department of Education includes funds that can be used for construction and those funds were used to support the construction of a 6,500 square foot O'odham Language Center on the main campus. That Center will provide office spaces, meeting spaces, and a curation room as well as a recording studio. 6) The Title III funds are also used to support tutors in a range of subject areas, a support that helps our students pass difficult subject areas. 7) A BIA grant in Occupational Training helps support our Apprenticeship Program and the full-time instructors in plumbing and electrical and carpentry, thus helping expand the program from a dozen apprenticeship students to nearly 50. 8) A grant from the American Indian College Fund helps support the College's GED (General Education Diploma) program that is building its clientele and assisting folks who want to earn their high school equivalency and, in many cases, to go on for college degrees.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
