Mission and programs · 2025
Mission
Animal-Kind International supports animal welfare organizations in poor countries, mainly in Africa, secondarily in Latin America/Caribbean. We raise money so they can spay/neuter, shelter, feed, and provide vet care for unwanted animals and in cruelty cases; conduct in-school and community humane education; and provide donkey and horse welfare programs. We support our Partner Organizations through ongoing disbursements so they always have a reliable source of funds and can focus on animal care and welfare. We reach and strengthen other animal welfare organizations through our annual Animal Welfare Organization Grant Program, providing funds for one-time projects based on a successful proposal. Through our Friendly Audit Program, we provide virtual volunteer mentors who provide technical and organizational support to target animal welfare organizations in Africa and Latin America/Caribbean.
Activities or mission (Part I)
Animal-Kind International supports animal welfare organizations in poor countries, primarily in Africa, secondarily in Latin America/Caribbean. We raise money for them and raise visibility of their work. We track their use of AKI funds and provide this information to our supporters. We support our Partner Organizations through ongoing disbursements ensuring that they have enough funds to carry out their programs. We also sponsor an annual Animal Welfare Organization Grant Program, which supports grant projects based on the submission of a successful proposal. Thirdly, we provide technical and administrative assistance to our partners and grantees, and to other target organizations to help strengthen African and Latin American/Caribbean animal welfare organizations.

Program Area One, Support for AKI's 10 Partner Organizations. Our POs can use AKI funds for their priority animal welfare needs. In 2025: 1) Uganda Society for the Protection and Care of Animals used AKI funds for shelter operations (e.g., dog and cat food, staff salaries, vet and shelter supplies, spay/neuter and other vet care, and maintenance & construction of shelter facilities); 2) Sauvons nos Animaux-Congo used AKI funds for shelter operations (e.g., 100% of cat and dog food and shelter staff salaries, vet and shelter supplies, and transport); 3) Twala Trust-Zimbabwe covered almost 100% of the dog food needed for Doggy Tuesday feeding program, a new solar system at their shelter, and vet supplies, shelter supplies, and utilities at their shelter with a focus on benefiting the seniors of the Waggley Tail Club; 4) AKI funds for Bam Animal Clinics-Uganda covered 100% of their donkey vet clinics and humane saddle making training programs; 5) The Six Freedoms-Ghana covered almost 100% of their horse welfare activities including horse feed and nutrients for rescued horses, farrier services for beach horses, stipends to grooms, and horse stable inspection teams; 6) an Emergency Vet Fund overseen by Partner Have a Heart-Namibia for which AKI covered vet care for 92 cats and dogs; 7) Kingston Community Animal Welfare's (Jamaica) feeding, spay/neuter, other vet care, and rescue of cats and dogs living on Kingston's streets (almost 100% of the cost was covered by AKI) plus the purchase of a spay/neuter and rescue mobile -a used SUV; for 8) Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society, we covered the cost of their humane education program and remote animal care clinics, as well as office/clinic rent; for 9) South Sudan SPCA we funded the cost of bringing 3 staff members from Kenya SPCA to South Sudan to train and help organize a spay/neuter campaign; and 10) Helping Hands for Hounds of Honduras used AKI funds for dog and cat food and vet supplies for the cats and dogs living at their old age/hospice sanctuary.

Program Area 2: We started our grant program in 2018 so that we could help more organizations, beyond our Partner Organizations. In 2025, in addition to Africa-based organizations, Latin American/Caribbean organizations were eligible to apply to our grant program for the first time. Our 2025 Animal Welfare Organization Grant Program (8th annual grant program, previously known as the Africa-Based Animal Welfare Organization Grant Program) awarded small grants to 13 animal welfare organizations in Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. In Africa we awarded 8 grants: two in South Africa, two in Tanzania, one in Kenya, one in Cameroon, one in Namibia, and one in Israel. In LAC we awarded 5: one each in Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Honduras, and Haiti. For 1st year grantees, grant size was limited to $2000 plus any additional funds donated and designated by specific supporters. For grantees who successfully completed a grant previously, the grant ceiling was $3000 (plus additional designated donations). The grants supported projects such as: spay/neuter and vet care in impoverished communities; new roof, drainage, and insulation at a cat sanctuary; horse and donkey care including chemical castration, feeding, and vet care; vaccinations and vet care for shelter cats and and dogs; construction of a donkey shelter to house donkeys rescued from the illegal skin trade, and training animal health care students in dog and cat welfare and rescue. We awarded grants to: Tanzania Small Animal Veterinary Organization and Animal Smile-Tanzania; Blind Love and SPCA-Grahamstown, both in South Africa; INADES formation in Kenya; Animal Welfare Society-Cameroon; Triglav Trust in Namibia; Starting Over in Israel; Huellas de Amor, Colombia; Rivadeneira Sterilization Center, Ecuador; Vida de Gatos, Chile; Amor y Abrigo, Honduras, and Fondation Alliance Verte, Haiti.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
