Mission

MCCE is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization working to ensure that Maine's campaign finance laws, elections, and government serve the public interest, both in principal and practice.

Activities or mission (Part I)

To educate and engage the public on money in politics and campaign finance law, and to encourage citizen participation in our electoral system and government to make a more politically responsive democracy.

  • Maine Citizens for Clean Elections works to engage Maine people from across the political spectrum, using research, education, and outreach to further fairness, inclusion, and opportunity in our politics. We believe in the importance of the Maine Clean Elections Act, the first system of full public financing for state candidates in the country, passed via referendum in 1996. Achievements in 2022-2023 included the production of reports on the state of Maine's democracy and Money in Politics, non-partisan election observation and voter information, supporting efforts to ensure safe access to voting during, and more.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
