Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

The organization works to challenge and end the human rights abuses committed against transgender, gender variant, and intersex people, particularly against Black and transgender women of color, in California prisons, jails, detention centers, and beyond.

  • TGIJP was founded in 2004, and is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023. TGI Justice Project has successfully been providing services to the Black transgender and gender nonconforming community in San Francisco, primarily in the areas of re-entry services, leadership development, community organizing, and legal and social support services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated trans community members. We have recently added a Housing Program and in the last year a Wellness Program that centers the unique needs of formerly incarcerated Black Trans community members to re-engage in society. In 2023, we served about 750 people through our San Francisco based programs, and as many as 1000 people in California and nationally.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
