Mission

The National Wilderness Stewardship Alliance supports stewardship organizations working within the National Wilderness Preservation System. We provide website resources, trainings, webinars, newsletters, produce the annual National Wilderness Workshop, and provide funding through challenge costs shares with the US Forest Service.

Activities or mission (Part I)

To grow and support a national network of wilderness and public land stewardship organizations to provide ongoing stewardship for America's wilderness areas.

  • NWSA supports wilderness stewardship groups across the country with funding opportunities, mentoring, and assistance developing partnerships and working with land management agencies. NWSA's US Forest Service challenge cost share program helps organizations build capacity for public land stewardship.

    Expenses $892,939 · Grants $998,908

  • NWSA offers many on-line and digital resources, including tookits for stewardship organization start-up, sharing of best practices, grant writing, and actions affecting wilderness stewardship. NWSA curates a monthly wilderness newsletter and hosts webinars to connect and educate the wilderness stewardship community. We also offer small grants, sourced from endowment funds, to assist new wilderness stewardship groups with start-up costs.

    Expenses $15,929

  • NWSA co-hosts the annual National Wilderness Workshop, a national gathering of volunteers, stewardship groups, academics, and land management agency professionals to connect the wilderness stewardship community, share best practices, keep current with conservation science, learn from experts and each other, and develop scalable solutions to issues affecting wilderness management and stewardship.

    Expenses $3,005

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
