Mission and programs · 2023
Primary exempt purpose
Portland Youth Theater's primary exempt purpose is to unlock self-discovery in young people through the transformative power of theater. Our programs reach hundreds of kids each week in our venue and in schools throughout our community, providing a safe, nurturing and happy environment in which kids can create theater while learning about themselves and the world around them.
-
INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES - Kids of all ages, abilities, and experience levels participated in a full season of all-student, public performances of musicals and plays. In 2023, we expanded our program to include early childhood age groups (ages 3-5) for the first time since before the pandemic.
-
IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES - Teaching artists develop and deliver customized performing arts programming to take place in public schools, independent schools, and homeschool programs. We expanded our in-school programs in 2023, with residencies in several new schools. We also began partnering with local public elementary schools to bring theater education to their before and after care programs.
-
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: STAGES teaching artists and staff members provide no-cost workshops, classes, and other educational programs for schools, local businesses, neighborhood associations, and other community organizations. This type of outreach exists in a variety of forms including participation in festivals/fairs, theater/arts or kid-centric events, career fairs for middle and high school students, library programs, etc. In 2023, we brought innovative multidisciplinary programs to several non-theater programs including outdoor adventure and environment-oriented youth organizations, competitive skate teams, and other sports teams.
As filed on the 2023 return.
