Mission

NYLPI'S MISSION IS TO ADVANCE EQUALITY AND CIVIL RIGHTS, WITH A FOCUS ON HEALTH JUSTICE, DISABILITY RIGHTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE, THROUGH THE POWER OF COMMUNITY LAWYERING AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE PRIVATE BAR.

Activities or mission (Part I)

TO ADVANCE EQUALITY AND CIVIL RIGHTS, THROUGH THE POWER OF COMMUNITY LAWYERING AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE PRIVATE BAR.

  • NYLPI's Disability Justice Program works to achieve equality of opportunity, self-determination, and independence for people with disabilities. Through individual representation, impact litigation, community organizing, and legislative advocacy, NYLPI's work combats discrimination, advances community integration, and ensures opportunity and access to education, housing, public accommodations, and government services.

    Expenses $2,304,563 · Revenue $187,629

  • Through its Environmental Justice Program, NYLPI confronts environmental racism, works to eliminate the unfair burden of environmental hazards borne by low-income communities and Indigenous, Black, Brown, Asian, and other communities of color in an effort to create a more equitable and sustainable New York. Our Environmental Justice team builds campaigns, pursues strategic litigation, designs and develops community-led organizing initiatives, and shapes policy. NYLPI supports local, bottom-up leadership and strengthen communities' ability to assert their right to a healthy and sustainable environment.

    Expenses $948,967 · Revenue $262,962

  • NYLPI's Health Justice program brings a racial justice and immigrant rights focus to its advocacy to ensure healthcare for all. In close partnership with frontline communities, the program uses a wide range of advocacy tools - including community organizing, coalition-building, individual representation, impact litigation, and legislative advocacy - to advance four broad goals: combat the human rights crisis in immigration detention; promote immigrant access to healthcare; eliminate racial and ethnic discrimination and systemic and institutional barriers that limit New Yorkers access to healthcare; and address the social determinants of health so that all New Yorkers can live healthy lives.

    Expenses $1,483,866

  • Pro Bono Program

    Expenses $679,605

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
