Mission and programs · 2023
Primary exempt purpose
TRU organizes for economic justice including better public transit, stronger renter protections & labor standards, and progressive funding for public goods and services in Seattle and King County. In 2023, our main areas of work included leading or supporting campaigns to raise the minimum wage in Burien, unincorporated King County, and Renton; organizing for stronger renter protection policies in Seattle, SeaTac, Shoreline, and Tukwila; continuing direct "mutual aid" work with people living unsheltered in Seattle; and researching progressive tax options and advocating for progressive revenue in Seattle.
-
Stay Housed Stay Healthy Coalition: TRU continued working with and helping to lead this coalition of over 50 organizations, organizing with renters and championing renter interests. In 2023, we succeeded in winning stronger renter protection policies in SeaTac, Seattle, and Shoreline, and did a lot of organizing with Tukwila renters to lay the foundations for winning stronger renter protections policies in that city. Policies we won included longer notice of significant rent increases, capping late fees, capping move-in fees at one month's rent and allowing payment in installments, allowing tenants on fixed incomes to change their rent due date, Just Cause eviction protections, and banning requirement of a social security number on rental applications. We mobilized renters and allies to meet with elected officials to share their stories, testify at council meetings, send emails, and advocate for stronger protections.
Expenses $55,814
-
Camp Outreach Project: TRU members continued a 100% volunteer-run project providing direct assistance to people living unsheltered during the COVID-19 pandemic, when a severe shortage of shelter and affordable housing has left many people without a stable home. Volunteers cooked weekly meals to serve at several homeless encampments where they built relationships and assisted the residents. They also purchased basic supplies like water, clothing, batteries and fuel, especially during the winter months. TRU members fundraised from individual supporters specifically for this project, and we also received a grant from King County. This project served around 60 homeless individuals every week throughout the year, and over 25 TRU members and volunteers participated in running the program.
Expenses $59,542
-
Minimum Wage: TRU built on our 2022 Raise the Wage Tukwila victory by building a community-labor coalition to advocate for raising the minimum wage in Burien and unincorporated King County, and we also assisted the Raise the Wage Renton campaign. These efforts did not come to fruition in 2023, but in February 2024 Renton voters approved a minimum wage increase, and work in the other jurisdictions in ongoing.
Expenses $60,122
-
Progressive Revenue Advocacy: TRU had a seat on the Seattle Revenue Stabilization Workgroup, and a committee of TRU members did extensive research into progressive tax options and published a report.
