Mission
The Conservancy's mission is to restore, enhance, maintain and preserve Chastain Park through the implementation of its 20-year Master Plan. With one eye on Chastain Park's glorious past and another on its promising future, the Conservancy Board and membership are focused on four main objectives:Restore: Update and rehabilitate historic structures and legacy amenities to meet the needs of current and future visitors.Enhance: Add new facilities to improve the Park and continually make it a better experience. Maintain: Utilize efficient management practices to keep Chastain Park safe, clean and green at every level of operation. Preserve: Build a sustainable financial underpinning to ensure that the Conservancy's long-term goals are adequately funded through partnerships and corporate donations.
Activities or mission (Part I)
To Restore, Enhance, Maintain and Preserve Chastain Park's 268 acres for the estimated 3.2 million visitors annually.
-
Restore: Northwoods Trail RestorationIn 2023, the Chastain Park Conservancy completed the restoration of historic nature trails in the Northwoods area. The project rehabilitated one mile of crushed slate trails and bridges, connecting historic pavilion and grill sites. The restoration improved stormwater management and included a tree survey and invasive plant removal, opening up nearly 20 acres of newly accessible greenspace. This project aligns with our mission to restore and preserve the park's natural resources while enhancing visitor experiences.
Expenses $180,000
-
Enhance: Allison Brown Native Garden The Conservancy installed the Allison Brown Native Garden along the PATH near the American Legion. This outdoor educational garden promotes native plantings in the area and supports our partnership with American Legion Post 140. The garden serves as a reflection space for the community and showcases the park's beauty. This project contributes to our goal of promoting ecological sustainability and community engagements.
Expenses $120,000
-
Maintain: Volunteer-Driven Park Maintenance In 2023, the Conservancy engaged nearly 1,000 volunteers who contributed 3,000 hours to park maintenance. Activities included uncovering historic stone waterways from the 1940s, installing native plants throughout the park, painting benches, repairing picnic tables, and installing safety fencing. Volunteers also removed 144 cubic yards of trash and spread 28,800 pounds of mulch. These efforts significantly contribute to keeping the park clean, safe, and green for its 3.2 million annual visitors.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
