Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

Culturingua's mission is to cultivate, promote, and preserve Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian (MENASA) cultural, linguistic, and artistic heritage to invest in human, community, and economic development.

  • Economic Development: Workforce Development programs provide refugees an outlet and platform to use a skillset that leads to financial independence and economic mobility. The Sewing for Success program launched in 2022 which taught 26 Afghan women to sew by making various clothing items. It also supported the women to legally start their own microenterprise and open a business checking account. The Nourish to Flourish program empowers immigrants and refugees with culinary training. Culturingua supported small businesses in San Antonio by supporting to deploy approximately $1 million in grant funding to predominantly undeserved business owners impacted by COVID 19.

    Expenses $146,948 · Revenue $3,748

  • Youth Development: In the Virtual Exchange, Culturingua brought together high school students from its partner schools around the globe to work together to develop a solution for global issues. 246 students participated in 2022: 128 at various San Antonio ISD schools and 118 in Libya. Students in both geographies showed meaningful improvements in: Knowledge of the other geography, ability to take the perspective of people from the other geography, cross-cultural collaboration skills, and warm feelings towards people in the other geography. Additionally, Culturingua hosted its 3rd Annual Arabic Summer Camp in partnership with Advanced Learning Academy (ALA) in San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD). The camp focused on teaching youth the language, culture, and arts of the Arab world.

    Expenses $125,334 · Grants $17,943 · Revenue $3,000

  • Community Development: Culturingua held the Second Annual Welcome Walk & Festival including a Small Business Bazaar in November 2022 to celebrate and embrace diversity with an impact on approximately 500 community members and business owners in the Medical Center community. Culturingua launched the Community of Welcome Program to support integration and belonging of newly arrived refugees. The program supported approximately 250 refugees and showed improvments in the refugees' integration into San Antonio in the dimensions of social, navigational, and psychological integration, using measures from Stanford's Immigration Policy Lab Immigrant Integration Index. Culturingua encouraged voter registration in the Middle Eastern/North African community to tackle disparities in voter participation and barriers to language access.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
