Mission and programs · 2023
Mission
Ruthless Kindness provides multiple programs to remove batteries to safety for the most at-risk animals and people. This includes free mobile veterinary care and animal supplies/support for victims of domestic violence and others in crisis, free tele-support and human-service partner consultations, and free boarding and foster home placement for the pets of people in crisis. Additional programs involve investing in a future where less crisis support is needed. These programs include empathy education and the Human Animal Welfare Coalition.
Activities or mission (Part I)
Our mission is to address the epidemic of violence and preventable suffering in at-risk animals and people.
-
Free mobile veterinary care for people in crisis: Ruthless Kindness holds on-site clinics at human service agencies serving at-risk community members, such as Family Justice Centers and shelters supporting women and children. In 2023, Ruthless Kindness provided 22 clinics and served 483 patients with free veterinary medicine. In recognition that 50% of victims of domestic violence will not seek safety unless their pets can come with them, Ruthless Kindness provides free on-call urgent pet support services for clients in crisis. Through direct contact or referral from victim advocate, law enforcement, safe house, rape crisis center, or other similar agency, Ruthless Kindness provides free urgent mobile veterinary care, vaccines, pet food, pet supplies, boarding, foster and financial support to victims with pets. 21 urgent care appointments clients were served in 2023.
Expenses $181,461
-
Telesupport for victims with pets: Ruthless Kindness fielded 730 calls for help in 2023.
Expenses $33,639
-
Ruthless Kindness offers Empathy Education, an 8-week program for youth exposed to violence. Held on site at animal sanctuaries and rich in animal interactions, this psychologist and survivor developed curriculum teaches resiliency, kindness, emotional safety, and is intended to break the cycle of violence.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
