Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

To create breakthrough technologies that catalyze discoveries in a spirited home for collaborative science. With the goal to build and disseminate new capabilities, engineer unique technologies, and pioneer pathways to fresh discoveries, the Institute has a vision to illuminate the path from discovery to cure. The pursuit of this vision holds true to our expressed values of Curiosity, Character, Commonality, Cultivation, and Champion for underserved science.

Activities or mission (Part I)

The Institutes mission is to transform real world problems into industry-leading solutions by creating breakthrough technologies, training and developing the next generation of scientists, and advancing the cause of underserved science.

  • The Scintillon Institute is a non-profit research institute located within the heart of the San Diego biotechnology community. The institute was founded in 2012 with the goal of discovering and developing new biological- and chemistry-based technologies that address the fundamental needs of our growing civilization. Our translational research focus includes the creation of novel chemical tools to detect and mitigate aging to promote increased healthspan; therapies to treat diseases such as HIV, type 1 diabetes, Parkinsons, hydrocephalus, neuroinflammation and sepsis; and novel biological imaging using cryo electron microscopy, high content imaging, and extracellular vesicle characterization with deep machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence. Our faculty investigators continue also to push the boundaries of new science through discoveries in areas of neurological pathways of food intake and satiety, blood brain barrier and neurovascular boundaries, lipid-based G protein signaling, mRNA-directed cell differentiation, and much more.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
