Activities or mission (Part I)

The Southern Center for Human Rights ("SCHR") is working for equality, dignity, and justice for people impacted by the criminal legal system in the Deep South. SCHR fights for a world free from mass incarceration, the death penalty, the criminalization of poverty, and racial injustice. Over our forty-six year history, SCHR has forced county, state, and federal governments to make significant improvements in prisons and jails to reduce overcrowding, provide adequate medical and mental health care, and abate violence and abuse. We have argued and won five death penalty cases at the U.S. Supreme Court, four of which challenged profound race discrimination in capital trials. Our combined litigation and policy advocacy helped bring about the creation of a statewide public defender system in Georgia in 2003. Today, SCHR embraces multifaceted strategies in its fight for a world free from mass incarceration, the death penalty, the criminalization of poverty and racial injustices.

  • SCHRs Impact Litigation Unit files civil suits to protect our communities against numerous injustices. This includes defending people who face severe criminal charges and receive harsh sentences; people who are incarcerated as a form of wealthbased detention; and people who suffer abuse and inhumane treatment in jails and prisons.

    Expenses $1,493,893 · Revenue $655,419

  • SCHRs Capital Litigation Unit provides direct representation to clients who are facing or who have received death sentences; consults with other capital defense teams and shares our expertise at trainings and conferences; and advocates for reforms to curtail the use of or abolish the death penalty.

    Expenses $2,131,388

  • SCHRs Public Policy Unit develops and advocates for legislation that reforms harshsentencing laws, provides alternatives to incarceration, abolishes the death penalty, strengthens the public defender system, and ends the criminalization of poverty. This unit works to engage and support local communities in advocating for needed criminal justice reforms.

    Expenses $1,083,686

  • SCHRs Reentry Program provides support to former SCHR clients who are returning home after being released from prison. SCHRs Client Services Advocate partners with these individuals to help remove obstacles towards housing, employment, healthcare, and social services as needed.

    Expenses $153,083 · Revenue $39,652

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
