Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.

The filer's explanations (Part III)
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 1a Tax indemnification and gross-up payments
- WILLIAM STARR RECEIVES CAR AND LIFE INSURANCE ALLOWANCES WHICH ARE GROSSED UP. THESE ALLOWANCES INCLUSIVE OF THE GROSS UP ARE INCLUDED IN TAXABLE COMPENSATION.
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 5a Compensation contingent on revenues of the organization
- FOR 2022, WILLIAM STARR AND JARRETT COLLINS WERE PAID BASE SALARIES, AND THEY RECEIVED BONUSES BASED ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PAN MASSACHUSETTS CHALLENGE FOR 2022, AS MEASURED BY THE SIZE OF ITS DONATION TO THE DANA-FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE (DFCI) THAT YEAR FOR CANCER RESEARCH. AS IN PRIOR YEARS, THE DONATION WAS DETERMINED BY THE PAN MASSACHUSETTS CHALLENGE BOARD OF DIRECTORS (MR. STARR AND MR. COLLINS WERE NOT PRESENT FOR, AND DID NOT PARTICIPATE IN, THE VOTE). THEIR BONUS COMPENSATION FORMULA WAS DESIGNED, AMONG OTHER THINGS, TO MAXIMIZE THE ORGANIZATION'S FUNDRAISING EFFICIENCY; AND HELPED THE PAN MASSACHUSETTS CHALLENGE TO, AGAIN, DONATE 100% OF RIDER-RAISED FUNDS RECEIVED IN THE CURRENT YEAR TO DFCI. (THE PAN MASSACHUSETTS CHALLENGE BUDGET IS UNDERWRITTEN BY SPONSORSHIP PAYMENTS, AUXILIARY REVENUE AND BIKE-A-THON REGISTRATION FEES.) WILLIAM STARR'S COMPENSATION CONSISTS OF AN ANNUAL BASE SALARY OF $514,752 AND A BONUS BASED ON THE AMOUNT THE PAN MASSACHUSETTS CHALLENGE DONATES FOR THE YEAR. HE RECEIVED A BONUS OF $370,000 IN 2022. JARRETT COLLINS' COMPENSATION CONSISTS OF A BASE SALARY OF $224,704 AND A BONUS OF $85,000 WHICH IS BASED ON THE AMOUNT THE PAN MASSACHUSETTS CHALLENGE DONATES FOR THE YEAR. DAVID HELLMAN'S COMPENSATION CONSISTS OF A BASE SALARY OF $181,256 AND A BONUS IN THE AMOUNT OF $20,333. WILLIAM ALFANO'S COMPENSATION CONSISTS OF A BASE SALARY OF $165,779 AND A BONUS IN THE AMOUNT OF $20,000. MICHELE SOMMER'S COMPENSATION CONSISTS OF A BASE SALARY OF $206,188 AND A BONUS IN THE AMOUNT OF $22,778. BONUSES FOR DAVID HELLMAN, WILLIAM ALFANO, MICHELE SOMMER, AND JARRETT COLLINS ARE AWARDED BASED 50% ON INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS AND 50% ON ORGANIZATION PERFORMANCE.
- Schedule J, Part I, Line 2 SUBSTANTIATION REQUIREMENT FOR LINE 1A ITEMS
- ORGANIZATION DID NOT REQUIRE SUBSTANTIATION PRIOR TO REIMBURSING OR ALLOWING EXPENSES INCURRED BECAUSE GROSS-UP PAYMENTS WERE ALLOWANCES AND SUCH SUBSTANTIATION IS NOT NEEDED FOR ALLOWANCES.
Part I's answers as filed. A line not listed was left unanswered; on lines 1a and 3 that means the box was not checked.
