Mission and programs · 2023
Mission
THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY MISSION IS TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NORTH AMERICANS TO BRING HOPE TO AFRICANS IN THE AREAS OF HUNGER, ORPHANS, POVERTY, AND EDUCATION.
Activities or mission (Part I)
THE ORGANIZATION SEEKS TO SERVE AFRICA IN THE AREAS OF HUNGER, ORPHANS, POVERTY, AND EDUCATION.
-
HIV/AIDS HAS RAVAGED THE COUNTRY OF ESWATINI AND MORE THAN 200,000 CHILDREN HAVE BEEN ORPHANED IN ITS WAKE. ALMOST HALF OF THE COUNTRY'S POPULATION ARE ORPHANS OR VULNERABLE CHILDREN. WITH OVER 160 CHILDREN LIVING ON PROJECT CANAAN RIGHT NOW, HEART FOR AFRICA RECEIVES A NEW BABY EVERY TWO WEEKS. MANY OF OUR CHILDREN ARRIVE WITH SEVERE MALNUTRITION AND SUFFER FROM ABUSE AND NEGLECT OFTEN LEAVING THEM WITH PHYSICAL, INTELLECTUAL AND/OR OTHER DEVELOPMENTAL CHALLENGES. PROVIDING A HOME, FOOD, CLOTHING, EDUCATION AND OTHER CARE UNTIL THEY REACH ADULTHOOD REQUIRES SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT. OUR COMMITMENT TO EACH CHILD IS TO PROVIDE THEM WITH A HOME UNTIL THEY'RE 18-YEARS OF AGE WHILE PROVIDING THEM WITH THE TRAINING, EDUCATION AND RESOURCES THEY NEED TO SECURE EMPLOYMENT.
Expenses $1,994,646 · Grants $1,452,210

PROJECT CANAAN, HEART FOR AFRICA'S 2,500-ACRE FARM IN ESTWATINI, IS AN INNOVATIVE INITIATIVE THAT BRINGS TOGETHER EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO GROW FOOD AND PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR MEN AND WOMEN. OUR DAIRY PROVIDES MILK AND FOOD FOR OUR CHILDREN AND STAFF, WHILE OUR EGG PROJECT PROVIDES NUTRITIOUS EGGS FOR THE CHILDREN AND ARE DELIVERED FREE OF CHARGE TO THOUSANDS OF ORPHANS EACH WEEK THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. DUE TO THE SEVERE DROUGHT AFFLICTING MUCH OF SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA WE LAUNCHED AN AQUAPONICS PROJECT FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE, WHILE MINIMIZING THE USE OF WATER. OUR WATER PIPELINE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE WATER SECURITY TO PROJECT CANAAN. WE ARE BUILDING A PIPELINE THAT DIRECTS THE FLOW OF NATURAL SPRINGS DOWN A MOUNTAIN ONTO OUR FARM THAT WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH OUR SYSTEM OF DAMS TO PROVIDE WATER FOR BOTH DOMESTIC AND AGRICULTURAL USE.
Expenses $1,728,514 · Grants $1,258,452

UNEMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY ARE TWO ENORMOUS CHALLENGES FACING THE PEOPLE OF ESWATINI. AS PART OF OUR FOCUS ON POVERTY AND EDUCATION (WHICH INCLUDES VOCATIONAL TRAINING), WE EMPLOY NEARLY 300 MEN AND WOMEN FROM THE AREAS AROUND PROJECT CANAAN. MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE WORK IN KHUTSALA ARTISANS WHERE THEY CREATE AUTHENTIC AFRICAN HANDCRAFTS SUCH AS BEADWORK ANIMALS, HOME DECOR AND CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS. THIS EMPLOYMENT PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FAMILIES TO REMAIN INTACT AND HELPS SWAZIS SECURE A SUSTAINABLE INCOME. IN ADDITION, 100% OF THE PROFITS FROM THE SALE OF THESE ITEMS GO DIRECTLY TO SUPPORTING THE CHILDREN'S HOMES. ON AVERAGE, EACH SWAZI WORKING FOR PROJECT CANAAN CARES FOR 13 OTHER PEOPLE, MEANING THAT EACH PERSON EMPLOYED HAS A MUCH GREATER ECONOMIC IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITIES SURROUNDING PROJECT CANAAN.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.

The filer's explanations (Part III)
- PART I, LINE 5
- THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVES THE ANNUAL BUDGET WHICH INCLUDES COMPENSATION FOR KEY EMPLOYEES, INCLUDING THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. THE BASE SALARY OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IS REVIEWED ON AN ANNUAL BASIS AND COMPARED TO SIMILAR POSITIONS WITH SIMILAR ORGANIZATIONS. IN ADDITION TO THE BASE SALARY, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IS ELIGIBLE FOR A BONUS BASED ON FUNDRAISING ACHIEVEMENTS, SPECIFICALLY WHETHER THE ORGANIZATION EXCEEDS THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GOAL ESTABLISHED FOR THE YEAR. IF THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GOAL IS EXCEEDED AND PERMITS THE ORGANIZATION TO ACCELERATE OR EXPAND PROGRAMS OR ACCELERATE CAPITAL EXPENDITURES THAT FURTHER THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION OF PROVIDING HOPE IN THE AREAS OF HUNGER, ORPHANS, POVERTY AND EDUCATION, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A MONETARY BONUS. FOR 2023, THE FUNDRAISING REVENUE EXCEEDED THE BUDGETED AMOUNT AND RESULTED IN A BONUS FOR THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. THE TOTAL COMPENSATION OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INCLUDING BASE SALARY AND BONUS, REMAINS IN THE TOTAL COMPENSATION RANGE FOR SIMILAR POSITIONS WITH SIMILAR ORGANIZATIONS.
Part I's answers as filed. A line not listed was left unanswered; on lines 1a and 3 that means the box was not checked.
