Mission
The mission of the corporation is to promote the highest quality patient-centered neurologic care.
Activities or mission (Part I)
The American Academy of Neurology Institute (AANI) provides top-tier education and scientific programming to the field of neurology and the broader medical community. The Academy is dedicated to the concept of lifelong learning and providing education opportunities that respond to members' needs over the course of their careers.
-
Annual Meeting and Conferences: The 2023 Annual Meeting, which took place over six days in Boston and online to accommodate member needs, drew a record 15,347 attendees. This award-winning meeting was rated good or excellent by 94% of attendees. On-demand content remained available for all conferences, allowing the AANI to reach learners on a global level as well as providing continued access to meeting content throughout the year. The value of these on-demand offerings has been appreciated by the members and supports the mission of the Academy. After the success of the previous year's event, the Academy held a hybrid Summer Conference focused on Emergency and Hospital Neurology that drew more than 500 registrants. More than 96% of attendees rated the conference good or excellent. More than 1,000 registrants took part in the hybrid Fall Conference, which included a pre-conference for advanced practice providers. All events were well attended and 97% of attendees rated the conference as good or excellent. The second AAN Brain Health Summit was held on September 21 in Washington, DC, convening more than 150 leaders in brain health science, policy, and education. During the summit, the AAN and American Heart Association (AHA) announced a new joint research program, the Ralph L. Sacco Scholarships in Brain Health, also known as the Sacco Scholars program.

Training / Tools / Resources (AANI): The AANI continues to address areas of controversy and importance in its evidence-based guidelines program. There are currently 10 active projects at various stages of development, and the AANI is participating in several collaborations with our neurology partners for subspecialty-related guidelines . The Academy continued to focus on various resources that help members provide optimal care for their patients. It published the guideline "Determination of Brain Death/Death by Neurological Criteria," updated the ALS measures set, released a series of webinars on telehealth, and provided analysis and recommendations for AAN members on a new dementia care model from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Work started on two new guidelines initiatives related to functional seizures and ALS care.
Expenses $4,011,128 · Grants $201,995
-
Continuing Medical Education Programs: The AANI was successfully reaccredited for the 2023-2026 reaccreditation cycle by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. It also made various enhancements to its virtual education tools, launching a new and improved learning management system and providing a major system update for the Neurology Question of the Day app. Finally, the Academy launched a new NeuroSAE(R) Medical Student Edition, which is designed for the medical student neurology clerk.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
