Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

Guatemala Village Health's mission is to improve health in rural Maya communities in Guatemala by working alongside village leaders and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health by facilitating the delivery of sustainable medical care, heath education and public health improvement projects incorporating best practices to make progress in Sustainable Development Goals from Zero Hunger and Good Health and Well-being to Clean Water & Sanitation and Reduced Inequalities in everything from access to medical care to education. Our permaculture farming work seeks to address climate change while providing sustainable nutrition.

Activities or mission (Part I)

To improve health in rural Guatemala through education, empowerment of local leaders, and development of local health providers. We provide primary health care services and health education in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and implement public health improvement projects.

  • Healthcare: Mobile medical and health clinic based primary care services provided to a population of 10,000 people in 15 rural Mayan Guatemalan villages in the mountains of El Estor, Izabal, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Our in-country health team travels daily to provide monthly visits to each village to provide acute care, management of chronic disease, pregnancy and contraceptive care, screening for cervical cancer, and administer a supplement program to 200 babies (6 months to 2 years of age) to prevent baby malnutrition / stunting of growth and child development monitoring. We provide medications and medical supplies to our patients, augmenting the Ministry of Health resources. Volunteer international medical teams consisting of 10 to 15 professionals provide additional clinical care and health screening serving approximately 1400 people per year. We provide ongoing health education to villagers, training for lay health workers, and education for nursing staff. Expenses include salaries for Guatemalan health team, medications, medical supplies, nutritional supplements, health worker training, scholarships, & in-country transportation, food & lodging.

    Expenses $368,153 · Grants $241,076

  • Public Health Improvement Projects: The Healthy Homes program provides water filters, composting toilets, and smokeless stoves, now with locally made bricks designed with the villagers. Villagers collaborate by paying a portion of the cost, gathering supplies for construction, and labor for construction of toilets & stoves. Villagers are trained in program implementation and construction. Our Permaculture farming program trains villagers to combat malnutrition through farming with edible food forests and kitchen gardens currently including 30 families. Lay Health workers provide education and ongoing supervision once home improvements are completed. Health promotors are given an incentive payment for their work to support these programs through participant recruitment, training and monitoring of use.

    Expenses $19,737 · Grants $20,167

  • Clinic Construction and Operation: We upgraded a clinic building that we previously constructed to fully comply with Ministry of Health standards by adding tile floors, finished ceilings, and filtered water available in exam rooms. The area is now separated from the larger community building/dormitory and being outfitted as a full service clinic which will be staffed by our Health Team and the Ministry of Health, and supervised by our Medical Director. The full scope of primary care will be provided at least weekly by our staff.

    Expenses $11,476

  • Education, Communication, & Village Development - Includes health education for health promoters and community members, and installation of satellite internet connectivity in an isolated village.

    Expenses $15,205

As filed on the 2024 return.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
