Mission and programs · 2022
Mission
To promote public discussion about the vitality of democracy in North Carolina: increase voter education, voter registration and civic participation in the state; examine the influence of private money on public policy and elections; and evaluate the relative importance of various governmental reforms, including public financing of elections.
-
In 2022, our Policy, Communications and Organizing departments worked in conjunction to achieve the following results. Democracy North Carolina distributed more than 2 million free non partisan-voter guides and created more than 20 voter education resources including a redesigned voter information site - ncvoter.org.
Expenses $2,991,989 · Grants $403,300
-
Democracy North Carolina's Elections Advocacy program collaborated with more than 250 local election advocates to monitor activities at County Boards of Elections, advocate for additional early voting sites and hours, improved meeting transparency, and visibility in the ballot counting and certification process."
Expenses $442,824 · Grants $19,000
-
Our Vote Protection program trained and deployed more than 800 Volunteer Vote Protectors during the primary and general election. Democracy North Carolina regranted funds to 45 local community partners to defend voting rights and to deploy Volunteer Vote Protectors.
-
Democracy North Carolina owns and hosts the Election Protection hotline for the state of NC - 888-Our Vote. In conjunction with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, the hotline was staffed by trained volunteers (lawyers, law students and voting rights experts) who fielded 3,000 calls, 900 on Election Day alone, during early voting and on Election Day. We were pleased with the overwhelming response by volunteers, as we increased our recruitment tactics. We almost doubled the volunteers we needed to fulfill shifts and were able to plan accordingly for any attrition. Volunteers loved their experience by 97%, and 94% plan to volunteer again. The hotline dealt with issues ranging from technical voting issues, to delayed openings of polling sites, to potential voter intimidation. Democracy NC and its coalition partners successfully petitioned the NC State Board of Election to extend voting hours in precincts that opened late or experienced technical issues.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
