Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

To eliminate hunger by harvesting community resources and being a voice of the hungry.

  • The food recovery program began in 2000 to safely recover donated food for free distribution to area meal sites, food pantries and youth programs. We are the hub for local food donations and serve over 120 programs in La Crosse, Monroe, Trempealeau and Vernon counties in Wisconsin, Houston and Winona counties in Minnesota and Allamakee county in Iowa. We are La Crosses only free and local food bank.

    Expenses $389,536 · Revenue $51,564

  • Kane Street Community Garden-We operate the community garden at the corner of Kane and St. Cloud streets on the north side of La Crosse. The garden was established in 1998 on city owned property and began with producing 5,000 pounds. Today, the garden produces tens of thousands of pounds of produce each year which is distributed to people needing food assistance. Volunteers and the community are also invited to take home free, fresh produce. Daily volunteers prepare, plant, maintain and harvest the fruits and vegetables beginning in mid-March. Every Monday, Thursday and Saturday during the harvest season, which begins in June, volunteers assist in picking vegetables which are then distributed on site to individuals.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
