Mission and programs · 2022
Primary exempt purpose
Our mission is to uplift the well-being of the community through experiential nature-based programs. By providing hands-on environmental education to urban youth and adults, we empower leaders and cultivate a connection to the natural world and local watershed. We work tirelessly to ensure underserved communities can pursue meaningful outdoor experiences.
-
Environmental Education - In 2022, we helped teach over 3,500 people about boating, fishing, and environmental education. Outreach is performed in up to 7 languages to reach underserved communities. We teach safety, park history, and ways to recreate in nature. Free fishing rods, supplies, PFD's, binoculars, and gear are provided for all events. All our qualitative and quantitative measures demonstrated that families perceived mental and physical improvements from our programs. These improvements were greatest with youth who completed our intensive spring and summer programs. Youth Empowerment - 25 high school aged youth, all who qualify for free and reduced price meals, attended trips, classes, and training programs. These youth were empowered as leaders and helped to teach others in their community about outdoor recreation, hands-on science, and more. Free food was provided at all events. Supplies and equipment were raffled off and families were supported to create their own community programs. Our partnership with PA State Parks was deepened as students learned water testing and interactive science on trips in the city and beyond. Students earned spots on trips by volunteering in FDR Park and the community. Youth led park clean ups, cooking classes, community art, and more. All youth stated they felt empowered and supported in our programs. This was also demonstrated through their successful leadership in outreach and park events.
Expenses $55,500

Community Health - Discovery Pathways organized 3 large community health fairs. Over 578 people attended these events. Events included healthy food, dance, cooking, mental health resources, and more. We also helped organize large food donation events and connected families to free food at local pantries and kitchens. All our programs are culturally relevant and we work to translate outreach and materials. Over 37 families in need were directly connected to local healthy food resources. We continue to organize volunteers and donations for 3 local community gardens.
