Mission
East Side Freedom Library's (ESFL) mission is to inspire solidarity, advocate for justice and work towards equity for all.
Activities or mission (Part I)
East Side Freedom Library's (ESFL) mission is to inspire solidarity, advocate for justice and work towards equity for all. Founded in 2013 as an independent nonprofit organization, ESFL is a dynamic incubator for thoughts, ideas, and movements within and beyond the culturally diverse and historically rich community of the Payne-Phalen neighborhood in the East Side of Saint Paul. The organization's mission comes alive through endorsing core values that honor unique life journeys, amplify diverse voices, reinvent the library as a relevant space, ignite a living history through books and special collections, and generate new ideas and activism leading to systemic change. A crucial aspect of ESFL's mission is to address the historical narrative surrounding immigration, social movements, labor, and African American histories.

Arts and Culture: East Side Freedom Library (ESFL) has also deepened and expanded our Cultural Work, which intersects with our Teaching and Learning and Labor and Equity work. From our very start, we have seen cultural work as a vehicle to promote our mission: "To inspire solidarity, advocate for justice, and work towards equity for all." Poetry, visual art, theater, story-telling, dance, and music, are all means for members of our communities to tell their stories and for us to listen to them. There remain challenges to in-person gatherings, we have used Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube to provide platforms for artists and writers to tell their stories and for diverse audiences to listen, watch, engage, and learn. ESFL is committed to bringing stories from the margins to the center of our awareness. Often, this work relies on partnering with diverse organizations and creating platforms for members of those organizations to share their stories. ESFL organized an artist in residence program to create arts community-driven arts events and gatherings.

Labor & Equity: Our partnership with New Brookwood Labor College is a part of ESFL's endeavors in Labor and Equity. Its courses, Working Class History, People's Leadership, Theories of the Labor Movement, The Global Labor Movement, and Organizing Strategies, are designed and taught to enable the current generation of labor activists to develop understanding of the labor movement as one of the vehicles available to working class people in their efforts to create a more just society. In a similar vein, ESFL has organized and hosted a series of panel discussions. Our Labor Advisory group helped organized several educational programs, including the Annual Labor Solidarity Picnic, where workers across the Twin Cities come together to celebrate Labor Day as an expression of unity and solidarity. We launched our Solidarity Supper Series at ESFL as another way to create community together. We believe sharing a meal in community is a way to build relationships, create new connections, and learn from one another.

Housing Justice: The Housing Justice program work towards our goal of bringing neighbors, community organizations like churches, various nonprofits, and district councils into conversation with one another about the challenges we all face here relating to housing inequity and injustice. The Housing Justice program was created directly out of the community, voicing the need for an alternative solution that isn't solely focused on service providers, but also the narrative-shifting conversations that are necessary for us to see real systems change happen. With a racial justice lens, focusing on issues that impact the unhoused, renters, and homeowners, the Housing Justice Program was created to confront systemic inequity in housing.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
