Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

To convene and support people, organizations and communities to collaborate on quality of life and public health issues.

  • Reducing Tobacco Use and Exposure and Reducing Substance Misuse:HCCA partners with over 75 individuals, organizations, and municipalities to reduce the impact of tobacco use and exposure and prevent other substance misuse through policy and environmental changes, education, interventions, and community engagement. A portion of this work is accomplished through youth engagement where youth identify local needs and advocate for change. HCCA hosts Gardiner Area Thrives, a Drug Free Communities Coalition. Funding for primary prevention comes mostly from federal and state government contracts (Centers for Disease Control, Maine Prevention Network). However, these funds do not meet all community needs. HCCA identifies gaps, creates strategic plans based on best practice, and seeks additional resources from philanthropic funders. Examples include tobacco prevention with high needs populations and youth summer supports funded by United Way, Volunteer Maine, and Maine Cancer Foundation.

    Expenses $988,871

  • Eating Healthy, Being Active:Healthy eating and active living are key components for a lifetime of health. HCCA is funded through a mix of federal, state, and philanthropic grants to provide nutrition education and resources, and works with schools, worksites, and communities to integrate healthy food and activities into daily living to prevent diet-related illnesses and support overall health. (USDA, Maine Prevention Network, Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry). HCCA is a leader in organizing statewide Farm to School and Institution networks, providing workshops and partnering with an array of organizations to get more local food into more food-serving institutions. (Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, Henry P. Kendall Foundation, Full Plates Full Potential, National Young Farmers, Shelburne Farms, Third Sector New England, CEBE, University of New England, Northeast Organic Farming Association, Maine Agriculture in the Classroom, Maine Health)

    Expenses $493,677

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
