Mission

SHARING EXCESS (SE) IS A PHILADELPHIA-BASED NONPROFIT THAT USES SURPLUS FOOD AS A SOLUTION TO SCARCITY. WHILE OVER 40 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE US FACE FOOD INSECURITY, NEARLY 40% OF THE NATION'S FOOD SUPPLY IS GOING TO WASTE. OUR MISSION IS TO SOLVE THE LOGISTICAL BARRIER BETWEEN EXCESS AND SCARCITY BY PARTNERING WITH THE LARGEST RETAILERS, WHOLESALERS, AND FARMERS TO DELIVER SURPLUS FOOD TO A NETWORK OF NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT ALLEVIATE LOCAL FOOD INSECURITY.

Activities or mission (Part I)

Sharing Excess (SE) is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that uses surplus food as a solution to scarcity. While over 40 million people in the US face food insecurity, nearly 40% of the nation's food supply is going to waste. Our mission is to solve the logistical barrier between excess and scarcity by partnering with retailers, wholesalers, and farmers to deliver surplus food to a network of non-profit organizations that alleviate local food insecurity.

  • Wholesale Rescue: We have partnerships with high-volume food businesses at terminal produce markets to glean and rescue surplus food and deliver it to communities in need. Currently rescuing 520,000 pounds of produce weekly.

    Expenses $113,984,469 · Grants $111,518,085

  • Direct Link: We organize pickup and delivery nationwide from small to high volume partners, connecting surplus to local organizations through logistical coordination outside of our physical service areas. We have partnerships with freight companies to move truckloads of product and rideshare partnerships to facilitate free deliveries with passenger vehicles.

    Expenses $52,857,138 · Grants $51,407,289

  • Retail Rescue: We deploy full-time drivers in refrigerated cargo vans to pick up surplus food from retail locations on a daily basis and deliver it to hunger relief organizations. This is streamlined by our custom technology which drivers use for guidance and donation tracking.

    Expenses $10,607,139 · Grants $10,329,409

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
