Mission and programs · 2025

Mission

Our organization has developed a formation program for those seeking to commit to a new monastic life. This three-year formation program helps prepare participants to devote themselves to a life of prayer and service. We interpret the Christian contemplative tradition for people who are living in the world. This activity is conducted by the cofounders listed as officers in this document. Most of the formation happens online with weekly hour long sessions for three different cohorts. We also have a monthly Saturday intensive and two in-person retreats which take place at spiritual retreat centers around the country. We also offer a companion formation program that is less rigorous for those who are interested in engaging with our teaching but cannot commit to the full formation program. This involves a monthly online gathering and individual mentoring.

  • Through engagement in contemplative practices rooted in Blackness we foster a deeper understanding of the Black diasporic contemplative tradition. By delving into rich texts honoring the African Diaspora and fostering a shared practice we empower personal growth and collective healing.

    Expenses $93,911 · Revenue $990

  • We provided formation for 25 people on the path to becoming new monastics as well as 10 people on the path to becoming companion members. Our rigorous formation program is offered by donation only so that all may participate regardless of financial status.

    Expenses $12,019 · Revenue $26,397

  • Hundreds of people attended our public events classes and meditations featuring contemplative authors practitioners and academics. Offered to the public by donation only.

    Expenses $5,312 · Revenue $19,383

  • General operations and administration of our programs including salaries and supplies for overall support.

    Expenses $218,355

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Not present in the most recent drop.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
