SEE SCHEDULE O.

Activities or mission (Part I)

SEE SCHEDULE O.THE AMERICAN BOARD OF INTERNAL MEDICINE (ABIM) SEEKS TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF HEALTH CARE BY CERTIFYING INTERNISTS AND SUBSPECIALISTS WHO DEMONSTRATE THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTITUDES ESSENTIAL FOR EXCELLENT PATIENT CARE.

  • ABIM BOARD CERTIFICATION DEMONSTRATES THAT PHYSICIANS HAVE COMPLETED INTERNAL MEDICINE AND SUBSPECIALTY TRAINING AND HAVE MET RIGOROUS STANDARDS THROUGH INTENSIVE STUDY, SELF-ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION. ADDITIONALLY, CERTIFICATION ENCOMPASSES THE SIX GENERAL COMPETENCIES ESTABLISHED BY THE ACCREDITATION COUNCIL FOR GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (ACGME) AND SETS THE STAGE FOR CONTINUAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH VALUES CENTERED ON LIFELONG LEARNING.CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O.IN ORDER TO BE CERTIFIED, A PHYSICIAN MUST:* COMPLETE THE REQUISITE PRE-DOCTORAL MEDICAL EDUCATION* MEET SPECIFIC TRAINING REQUIREMENTS* MEET LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURAL REQUIREMENTS* PASS A CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONABIM ADMINISTERS ITS CERTIFICATION PROCESS BY: (1) ESTABLISHING REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAINING AND SELF-EVALUATION; (2) ASSESSING THE PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS OF CANDIDATES; (3) OBTAINING SUBSTANTIATION BY APPROPRIATE AUTHORITIES OF THE CLINICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONAL STANDING OF CANDIDATES; AND (4) DEVELOPING AND CONDUCTING EXAMINATIONS AND OTHER ASSESSMENTS.INITIAL CERTIFICATION BY ABIM SIGNIFIES A PHYSICIAN IS READY TO PRACTICE IN INTERNAL MEDICINE OR ONE OF ITS SUBSPECIALTIES.

    Expenses $23,144,081 · Revenue $40,841,870

  • ABIM'S MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION (MOC) CREDENTIAL MEANS SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM INITIAL CERTIFICATION. IT SPEAKS TO THE QUESTION OF WHETHER OR NOT AN INTERNIST IS STAYING CURRENT WITH KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE IN HIS/HER DISCIPLINE. ABIM ISSUES A BINARY CONSEQUENTIAL MOC CREDENTIAL THAT IS ANCHORED IN WHETHER A PHYSICIAN IS MEETING A PERFORMANCE STANDARD. ABIM ISSUES THAT CREDENTIAL BASED UPON OBJECTIVE, FAIR, DEFENSIBLE PSYCHOMETRICALLY RIGOROUS STANDARDS. PARTICIPATION IN MOC MEANS THAT A PHYSICIAN IS DEMONSTRATING THAT S/HE IS ENGAGED IN CERTAIN CONTINUOUS LEARNING AND EDUCATION ACTIVITIES. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O.DIPLOMATES PARTICIPATING IN ABIM'S MOC PROGRAM ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE AND PASS AN ASSESSMENT EVERY 10 YEARS TO REMAIN CERTIFIED. THEY CAN DO THIS BY PASSING A POINT-IN-TIME ASSESSMENT CALLED THE TRADITIONAL, 10-YEAR MOC EXAM, OR ACHIEVING A PASSING SCORE AT THE CONCLUSION OF THEIR 5-YEAR LKA CYCLE. DIPLOMATES HOLDING CERTIFICATION IN CARDIOLOGY MAY ALSO BE ABLE TO SATISFY THIS REQUIREMENT BY ACHIEVING A PASSING SCORE IN THE COLLABORATIVE MAINTENANCE PATHWAY, AN ASSESSMENT PRODUCT JOINTLY CREATED AND ADMINISTERED BY ABIM AND THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY. MOST DIPLOMATES CERTIFIED PRIOR TO 1990 ARE STRONGLY URGED TO PARTICIPATE IN MOC BUT ARE NOT REQUIRED TO DO SO TO REMAIN CERTIFIED. FOR ALL DIPLOMATES, IN ADDITION TO REPORTING BOARD CERTIFICATION, ABIM WILL REPORT IF THEY ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE MOC PROGRAM (I.E., ENGAGING IN MOC ACTIVITIES FREQUENTLY).PARTICIPATION IN MOC AND CONTINUED CERTIFICATION BY ABIM SIGNIFIES A PHYSICIAN IS STAYING CURRENT IN HIS OR HER DISCIPLINE.

The first 25 listed. Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us. Earlier years are each on their own filing page.

Nonprofiteer parses Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF, in a window of recent tax years. These returns are recorded from the IRS e-file index, so their figures were extracted by that index rather than read from the return here — treat them as a different source from the filings above, not as more of the same record. A dash means the index carries no figure; Form 990-T listings carry none at all. Showing the 10 most recent; the API carries the rest.

Grants made

No itemized grants to organizations. Schedule I is filed only by organizations that granted more than $5,000 to a recipient, so most filers have none.

Grants received

Auto-Revocation List

Not listed. The IRS publishes this list for organizations whose exemption was automatically revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years.

Publication 78

Listed as of 13 October 2026, under deductibility PC.

These are two separate IRS files on two separate schedules, shown as published and not reconciled with each other. Neither is a statement about whether a contribution is deductible today: 19,245 organizations appear in Publication 78 while the IRS's own revocation file lists them as currently revoked, more than half of those revoked before 2019. Absence from Publication 78 is evidence of nothing, and presence is not evidence either. Verify current status with the IRS before relying on it.
